The event was intended for stakeholders involved in agricultural research  and rural development in developing countries. IITA had a special session to present its research portfolio  and an exhibition to showcase its work as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cgiar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CGIAR<\/a> research institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_13137\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13137\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/TROPENTAG_0617.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13137\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/TROPENTAG_0617-300x199-1.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of DG Sanginga (second from left) with IITA staff (L-R), Stefan Hauser, Haruki Ishikawa,  and Danny Coyne at the IITA booth\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13137\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DG Sanginga (second from left) with IITA staff (L-R), Stefan Hauser, Haruki Ishikawa,  and Danny Coyne at the IITA booth<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theme of the conference was \u201cManagement of l and use systems for enhanced food security\u2014conflicts, controversies,  and resolutions.\u201d More than 1,300 registered participants from about 80 or more countries attended the 3-day conference, which provided a forum for discussion of important issues on sustainable food systems that could improve food  and nutritional security in the tropics while preserving the natural resource base  and vital ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifpri.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IFPRI<\/a> Director General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifpri.org\/profile\/shenggen-fan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shenggen Fan<\/a>, representing the CGIAR, was one of the keynote speakers during the opening plenary session on day 1. He talked about \u201cBuilding a resilient global food system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IITA\u2019s session on the second day on <strong>L and use management<\/strong> featured a lead talk by <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/vanlauwe-bernard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bernard Vanlauwe<\/a>, R4D Director, Central Africa hub  and for Natural Resources Management (NRM) titled \u201cIs integrated soil fertility management a viable pathway towards the sustainable intensification of smallholder farming systems in sub-Saharan Africa\u201d;  and four other papers delivered by <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/coyne-daniel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danny Coyne<\/a>, Soil Health Scientist, on \u201cEnhancing legume productivity for sustainable intensification of maize-legume farming system in sub-Saharan Africa\u201d; <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/kreye-christine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christine Kreye<\/a>, Agronomist\/NRM expert (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cimonline.de\/en\/profile\/43.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CIM<\/a>), on \u201cIncreasing cassava productivity in the context of sustainable intensification\u201d; <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/jassogne-laurence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laurence Jassogne<\/a>, Project Coordinator \u2013 Systems Agronomist, on \u201cClimate-smart intensification of coffee  and cocoa smallholder systems in Africa\u201d;  and <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/kamara-alpha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alpha Kamara<\/a>, Savannah Systems Agronomist on \u201cUsing cropping system models  and geospatial tools to bring agronomy to scale in the savannahs of Nigeria.\u201d The session was chaired by <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/hauser-stefan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stefan Hauser<\/a>, Root  and Tuber Systems Agronomist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interactive session provided a good opportunity to highlight IITA\u2019s work on sustainable intensification  and natural resources management research. Other scientists who made presentations during a session on <strong>Crop biotic stresses<\/strong> included Hauser on \u201cWeed biomass production  and cassava yields in varying cassava cropping systems\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/akello-juliet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Juliet Akello<\/a>, Postdoctoral Fellow\/Plant Pathologist, on \u201cDeveloping an aflatoxin biocontrol product against aflatoxin-producing <em>Aspergillus<\/em> spp. in Zambia\u201d, Kamara on \u201cAssessment of level, extent,  and factors influencing Striga infestation of maize in the dry savannahs of Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plenary session on day 3 featured a presentation by Director General <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/sanginga-nteranya-e\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nteranya Sanginga<\/a> on \u201cIITA, the lead research partner facilitating agricultural solutions to overcome hunger  and poverty in sub-Saharan Africa; The critical role of appropriate soil fertility  and l and use management,\u201d presented on his behalf by Vanlauwe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanginga\u2019s presentation emphasized the challenges in smallholder farming in sub-Saharan Africa,  and how IITA is promoting sustainable intensification of smallholder agriculture  and innovative approaches to ensure the acceleration of research impact on farmers  and address the changing environments  and conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Days 1 to 3 featured guided poster sessions with more than 35 IITA posters on various topics related to the theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selon <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/hillbur-ylva\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ylva Hillbur<\/a>, DDG for Research for Development, \u201cOverall, the conference highlighted very well IITA\u2019s research work on the theme of the conference  and provided an opportunity for participants to know more about IITA  and its work. We thank the German Government for providing CIM experts who are doing a great job in IITA,  and we also thank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giz.de\/en\/worldwide\/germany.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GIZ<\/a>  and the conference organizers for inviting IITA as the featured center  and for hosting the IITA  and Friends socials.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IITA also showcased its work in a poster exhibition  and publications  and product displays.
