Dr Menkir has received this prestigious recognition for his efforts spanning 19 years at IITA in breeding maize with high yield potential, resistance to diseases  and Striga, tolerance to drought,  and low levels of aflatoxin production. Many of these varieties have been registered  and released by the national agricultural research systems (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/docrep\/w7501e\/w7501e06.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nars<\/a>)  and the private sector,  and have contributed to significant improvements in the productivity, income,  and well-being of people in West  and Central Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_13178\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13178\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/1024_Striga-IMG_3987_0617.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13178 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1024_Striga-IMG_3987_0617-300x200-1.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of IITA Maize Breeder Abebe Menkir (left) in the field with Abuelgasim Elzein, IITA Striga Biocontrol Specialist (right).\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IITA Maize Breeder Abebe Menkir (left) in the field with Abuelgasim Elzein, IITA Striga Biocontrol Specialist (right).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to his laudable scientific achievements that have contributed to agricultural development, he was considered for this award because of his collaboration with the NARS, the private sector,  and advanced research institutes in the US, UK,  and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor me this is a recognition of the output of the Maize Unit  and IITA\u2019s contributions to science  and development in Africa.
