{"id":12794,"date":"2026-06-20T12:25:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/news-item\/report-on-results-of-second-cycle-of-preliminary-trials-of-naro-iita-banana-hybrids-released\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T12:25:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:25:11","slug":"report-on-results-of-second-cycle-of-preliminary-trials-of-naro-iita-banana-hybrids-released","status":"publish","type":"news-item","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/report-on-results-of-second-cycle-of-preliminary-trials-of-naro-iita-banana-hybrids-released\/","title":{"rendered":"Report on results of second cycle of preliminary trials of NARO-IITA banana hybrids released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ug andan <a title=\"Visit The Ug andan National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naro.go.ug\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO)<\/a>  et le<a title=\"Visit IITA website \" href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institut International d'Agriculture Tropicale (IIAT)<\/a> have released a <a title=\"Read second NARITA report\" href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/c\/document_library\/get_file\/?uuid=1500c39e-7c05-4219-b649-85cdb1bd73f6&amp;groupId=25357\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second report<\/a> on the ongoing preliminary performance trials of the first-ever hybrid varieties of the East Africa highl and banana, jointly developed by the two organizations for food  and juice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_13192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13192\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1024_banana-truck-transport-in-Ug anda-PVA_0617.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13192\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1024_banana-truck-transport-in-Ug anda-PVA_0617-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of a truck transporting banana in Ug anda.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A truck transporting banana in Ug anda.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This coincides with the launch of a five-year project that will see these hybrid varieties known as <a title=\"Visit the NARITA hybrids page on ProMusa website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.promusa.org\/NARITA+hybrids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NARITA (NARO-IITA)<\/a> go for further evaluation on farmers\u2019 field across multiple locations in Tanzania  and Ug anda (<a title=\"Read story on &quot;Ug anda\u2019s Minister of Agriculture to officially launch project to boost banana production in East  and Central Africa&quot;\" href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/2015-press-releases\/-\/asset_publisher\/CxA7\/content\/ug andan-minister-of-agric-to-launch-project-to-boost-banana-production-in-east- and-central-africa\/?redirect=%2Fhome#.VVyZ-0ZCySp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See press release<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second report presents the results of the performance evaluation of 25 NARITA hybrids against the local check (Mbwazirume) in three crop cycles at Sendusu in central Ug anda. The hybrids again performed better than the local check for most of the traits being assessed including bunch weight. For example, 96% of the hybrids had an average mean bunch weight of 17.8 kg that was higher than that of the local check (11 kg).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there was also great variation in the performance of individual NARITA varieties throughout the three crop cycles including bunch weight which ranged from as low as 5 to as high as 45 kg. This shows there is immense potential for further improvement of the NARITA hybrids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/c\/document_library\/get_file\/?uuid=b9b48a00-2e85-42e5-b542-57a58cb15cf6&amp;groupId=25357\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first report<\/a> focused on the results of cycles 1  and 2. It also found that 96% of the hybrids had a bunch weight greater than that of the local check.
