Enostaven in pregleden dostop pa znanstvenikom omogo\u010da hiter in u\u010dinkovit razvoj novih sort rastlin, ki so izjemnega pomena za boj proti lakoti in rev\u0161\u010dini, pa tudi sredstvo za pre\u017eivetje v primeru katastrof globalnih razse\u017enosti.\n\nMednarodni in\u0161titut za tropske agrikulture je bil prvi, ki je na Svalbard na Norve\u0161kem, kjer bodo 26. februarja odprli t.i. \u00bbskladi\u0161\u010de za sodni dan\u00ab, dostavil po\u0161iljko vzorcev semen.\n\nV futuristi\u010dno skladi\u0161\u010de, ki je bilo ustanovljeno z namenom, da bo v primeru svetovne katastrofe zagotavljalo semena in genske vire za ponoven zagon pridelave hrane, je prispelo 21 zabojev, v katerih je 7.000 vzorcev semen iz 36 afri\u0161kih dr\u017eav. 330 kilogramov te\u017eko po\u0161iljko sestavljajo semena kulturnih in divjih vrst bene\u010danskega fi\u017eola, koruze, soje in burskih orehov oziroma ara\u0161idov.\n\nSkladi\u0161\u010de oziroma banka na Svalbardu predstavlja zgolj prostor za shranjevanje zalog semen, ki se dobavljajo in posodabljajo iz pomembnih genskih bank, ki izhajajo iz in\u0161titutov kot je IITA ter drugih organizacij, ki so del Konzularne skupine mednarodnega agrikulturnega raziskovanja (<em>Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research<\/em> \u2013 CGIAR).\n\nMatija Obreza, ki je za IITA v Nigeriji za\u010del delati oktobra lani, je ob tem izjemno pomembnem dogodku povedal: &#8220;Na podoben na\u010din kot Svalbard varuje dejanske genske vire, se moje delo osredoto\u010da na shranjevanje informacij o genskih virih, ki jih obenem posku\u0161am narediti pregledne in lahko dostopne za znanstvenike.&#8221;\n\n<hr \/>\n\n<b>Slovenia\u2019s Matija Obreza, a computer science graduate from the University of Maribor, is playing a key role in securing the world\u2019s food supply. The Slovenj Gradec native is developing software that will help to document  and preserve for future generations genetic material at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).<\/b>\n\nObreza\u2019s work at IITA is making it easier for scientists to access seeds  and germplasm so that new plant varieties can be developed in the fight against world hunger.\n\nThe institute\u2019s consignment of seeds was the first to arrive for the \u2018doomsday vault\u2019 on Svalbard in Norway, which opens on February 26.\n\nTwenty-one boxes containing 7,000 seed samples from 36 African nations were sent to the futuristic vault intended to act as insurance so that food production can be restarted should there be a global catastrophe. The seeds, weighing 330kg (730lb), are made up of varieties of domesticated  and wild cowpea, maize, soybean  and bambara groundnut.\n\nBut the bank is just a holding area \u2013 the seeds are being supplied  and updated from the more important genebanks of groups such as IITA, a part of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).\n\nThe 29-year-old Obreza, who began his work in October 2007, said: \u201cIn the same sense that Svalbard is protecting actual germplasm, I\u2019m focusing on preserving the information about that germplasm while also trying to make it
