Saly est une ville baln\u00e9aire pittoresque situ\u00e9e \u00e0 environ 80 kilom\u00e8tres au sud de Dakar, la capitale du pays.\n\nDe ses origines modestes dans les r\u00e9gions plus arides de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, o\u00f9 les agriculteurs cultivent le ni\u00e9b\u00e9, \u00e9galement connu sous le nom de pois \u00e0 vaches, depuis 5 000 ans, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 transport\u00e9 aux \u00c9tats-Unis dans les cales des navires n\u00e9griers, puis introduit dans le monde entier par le biais du commerce international. Aujourd'hui, le ni\u00e9b\u00e9 est une denr\u00e9e mondiale, cultiv\u00e9e dans presque toutes les r\u00e9gions du monde. Photo par IITA.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\nDans les ann\u00e9es \u00e0 venir, les scientifiques estiment que le ni\u00e9b\u00e9 pourrait ouvrir la voie aux efforts de l'Afrique pour lutter contre la malnutrition au sein de sa population croissante et faire face aux effets du changement climatique. L'\u00e9volution des conditions m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques qui menace d'ass\u00e9cher les champs des agriculteurs \u00e0 travers le continent met en lumi\u00e8re des cultures telles que le ni\u00e9b\u00e9, qui sont riches en vitamines et en prot\u00e9ines et qui se d\u00e9veloppent bien dans des conditions chaudes et s\u00e8ches. Le ni\u00e9b\u00e9 pr\u00e9sente l'avantage suppl\u00e9mentaire de lib\u00e9rer de l'azote qui r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e8re les sols appauvris.\n\n\u201c Le ni\u00e9b\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 largement n\u00e9glig\u00e9 malgr\u00e9 ses multiples avantages et le fait que le d\u00e9veloppement de nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s \u00e0 haut rendement pourrait augmenter les revenus agricoles de jusqu'\u00e0 50 pour cent tout en am\u00e9liorant la nutrition des m\u00e9nages \u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Hartmann, directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de l'Institut international d'agriculture tropicale (IITA), qui co-organise la Conf\u00e9rence mondiale sur la recherche sur le ni\u00e9b\u00e9 avec le gouvernement du S\u00e9n\u00e9gal, le programme de recherche collaborative sur les l\u00e9gumineuses \u00e0 grains secs (Dry Grain Pulses Collaborative Research Support Program) et l'Universit\u00e9 Purdue.\n\n\u201c Aujourd'hui, nous voyons des scientifiques courir contre la montre pour sauver et conserver des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de ni\u00e9b\u00e9 qui peuvent aider les agriculteurs \u00e0 lutter contre les nuisibles et les maladies et \u00e0 s'adapter aux environnements changeants \u201d, a-t-il soulign\u00e9.\n\nLes scientifiques se r\u00e9uniront au S\u00e9n\u00e9gal pour discuter des principales contraintes de la production de ni\u00e9b\u00e9, partager les progr\u00e8s r\u00e9alis\u00e9s dans la g\u00e9nomique avanc\u00e9e du ni\u00e9b\u00e9 et examiner les meilleurs moyens de lib\u00e9rer le potentiel du ni\u00e9b\u00e9 en tant que rempart contre le changement climatique, la faim et la pauvret\u00e9.\n\nParmi les sujets qui seront abord\u00e9s :\n<ul>\n \t<li>Sauver le ni\u00e9b\u00e9 de l'extinction : Progr\u00e8s des efforts mondiaux pour sauvegarder le patrimoine g\u00e9n\u00e9tique du ni\u00e9b\u00e9.<\/li>\n \t<li>\u201cPois \u201d sur mesure \u201c : Recherche g\u00e9n\u00e9tique de pointe pour d\u00e9velopper des pois \u00e0 \u0153il noir \u201d sur mesure \u00bb et r\u00e9sistants aux insectes.<\/li>\n \t<li>Profiter du ni\u00e9b\u00e9 : Les vari\u00e9t\u00e9s am\u00e9lior\u00e9es offrent une voie de sortie de la pauvret\u00e9.<\/li>\n \t<li>Nourriture spatiale : les efforts de la NASA pour utiliser le ni\u00e9b\u00e9 comme aliment pour les astronautes en raison de sa valeur nutritionnelle exceptionnelle et de son potentiel de culture dans les serres de la station spatiale.<\/li>\n \t<li>Carte g\u00e9n\u00e9tique du ni\u00e9b\u00e9 : actualisation des travaux visant \u00e0 produire une nouvelle carte g\u00e9n\u00e9tique du ni\u00e9b\u00e9 utilisant des m\u00e9thodes d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es dans le cadre du Projet G\u00e9nome Humain pour acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer les efforts de s\u00e9lection de vari\u00e9t\u00e9s am\u00e9lior\u00e9es.<\/li>\n \t<li>Lutte biologique contre les ravageurs du ni\u00e9b\u00e9 : utilisation d'outils g\u00e9nomiques pour d\u00e9velopper et d\u00e9ployer des agents de lutte biologique afin de g\u00e9rer les populations d'insectes ravageurs.<\/li>\n \t<li>Une agriculture plus \u00e9cologique : comment les agriculteurs utilisent le ni\u00e9b\u00e9 comme engrais \u201c vert \u201d pour revitaliser les sols d\u00e9grad\u00e9s, et se servent des d\u00e9chets de r\u00e9colte comme alimentation riche en \u00e9nergie pour les vaches, les moutons et les ch\u00e8vres.<\/li>\n \t<li>Post-r\u00e9colte \u2013 La r\u00e9duction des d\u00e9g\u00e2ts caus\u00e9s par les insectes au ni\u00e9b\u00e9 stock\u00e9 est un moyen rentable d'augmenter l'approvisionnement alimentaire.
