{"id":13018,"date":"2026-06-20T12:26:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/news-item\/new-varieties-of-drought-tolerant-maize-could-generate-up-to-us1-5-billion-for-africa\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T12:26:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:26:13","slug":"new-varieties-of-drought-tolerant-maize-could-generate-up-to-us1-5-billion-for-africa","status":"publish","type":"news-item","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/new-varieties-of-drought-tolerant-maize-could-generate-up-to-us1-5-billion-for-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"De nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de ma\u00efs r\u00e9sistantes \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse pourraient g\u00e9n\u00e9rer jusqu&#x27;\u00e0 $1,5 milliard de dollars am\u00e9ricains pour l&#x27;Afrique"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>La course est lanc\u00e9e pour remplacer les vari\u00e9t\u00e9s existantes face aux craintes que le changement climatique n'intensifie les s\u00e9cheresses et ne r\u00e9duise consid\u00e9rablement les r\u00e9coltes de ma\u00efs en Afrique subsaharienne.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alors que le changement climatique aggrave les conditions de s\u00e9cheresse en Afrique  et fait craindre un nouveau cycle de p\u00e9nuries alimentaires d\u00e9vastatrices, une \u00e9tude publi\u00e9e aujourd\u2019hui r\u00e9v\u00e8le que l\u2019adoption g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9e de vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de ma\u00efs r\u00e9cemment mises au point et r\u00e9sistantes \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse pourrait augmenter les r\u00e9coltes de 10 \u00e0 34 % dans 13 pays africains  et g\u00e9n\u00e9rer jusqu\u2019\u00e0 1 415 milliards de dollars de b\u00e9n\u00e9fices pour les producteurs  et les consommateurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c Nous devons agir de mani\u00e8re r\u00e9fl\u00e9chie, mais avec urgence, pour acheminer ces nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s des obtenteurs jusqu'aux agriculteurs, car leur potentiel pour \u00e9viter des crises est consid\u00e9rable \u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Roberto La Rovere, socio-\u00e9conomiste au Centre international d'am\u00e9lioration du ma\u00efs et du bl\u00e9 (connu sous son acronyme espagnol CIMMYT) et auteur principal de l'\u00e9tude, r\u00e9alis\u00e9e en partenariat avec l'Institut international d'agriculture tropicale (IITA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c Notre analyse montre qu'avec des taux d'adoption \u00e9lev\u00e9s, plus de quatre millions de producteurs et de consommateurs verraient leur niveau de pauvret\u00e9 baisser de mani\u00e8re significative d'ici 2016 \u201d, a-t-il ajout\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L'\u00e9tude a \u00e9t\u00e9 men\u00e9e dans le cadre de l'Initiative pour la tol\u00e9rance \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse du ma\u00efs en Afrique (DTMA), mise en \u0153uvre par le CIMMYT et l'IITA gr\u00e2ce au financement de la Fondation Bill &amp; Melinda Gates et de la Fondation Howard G. Buffett. Le CIMMYT et l'IITA ont collabor\u00e9 avec les centres nationaux de recherche agronomique en Afrique pour d\u00e9velopper plus de 50 nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de ma\u00efs qui, en conditions de s\u00e9cheresse, peuvent produire des rendements sup\u00e9rieurs de 20 \u00e0 50 pour cent \u00e0 ceux des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s existantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&#x27;analyse men\u00e9e par le CIMMYT et l&#x27;IITA sur les avantages du ma\u00efs conventionnel tol\u00e9rant \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse (DTMA) pour l&#x27;Afrique a examin\u00e9 l&#x27;impact potentiel de cette culture en Angola, au B\u00e9nin, en \u00c9thiopie, au Ghana, au Kenya, au Malawi, au Mali, au Mozambique, au Nigeria, en Tanzanie, en Ouganda, en Zambie et au Zimbabwe. Les chercheurs ont constat\u00e9 que, dans le cadre d\u2019une am\u00e9lioration \u201c prudente \u201d des rendements, les nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s apporteraient aux agriculteurs  et aux consommateurs de la nourriture  et des revenus d\u2019une valeur de $537 millions de dollars am\u00e9ricains, tandis que dans le cadre d\u2019une am\u00e9lioration \u201c plus optimiste \u201d des rendements, leur valeur passerait \u00e0 $876 millions de dollars am\u00e9ricains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De plus, les chercheurs estiment que si le ma\u00efs r\u00e9sistant \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse venait \u00e0 remplacer compl\u00e8tement les vari\u00e9t\u00e9s existantes dans les pays \u00e9tudi\u00e9s, les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices pourraient atteindre $1,5 milliard de dollars am\u00e9ricains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les agriculteurs et les consommateurs du Kenya, du Malawi, de la Zambie et du Zimbabwe tireraient les plus grands avantages, font remarquer les auteurs, car le ma\u00efs domine les r\u00e9gimes alimentaires et les moyens de subsistance locaux, et les agriculteurs de ces pays ont l'habitude d'adopter rapidement des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s am\u00e9lior\u00e9es de ma\u00efs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c L'objectif actuel est de rendre le ma\u00efs tol\u00e9rant \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse facilement accessible \u00e0 des millions de petits agriculteurs dans les pays o\u00f9 les s\u00e9cheresses, qui constituent toujours une menace persistante pour la production alimentaire, devraient devenir plus fr\u00e9quentes et plus graves \u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Hartmann, directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de l'IITA. \u201c Le ma\u00efs, c'est la vie pour 300 millions de personnes en Afrique, et \u00e0 mesure que les conditions climatiques se d\u00e9t\u00e9riorent, il revient aux chercheurs, en coop\u00e9ration avec les gouvernements, les entreprises semenci\u00e8res et les agriculteurs, de veiller \u00e0 ce que la production de ma\u00efs ne s'effondre pas. \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Par exemple, une \u00e9tude \u00e9valu\u00e9e par des pairs publi\u00e9e l'ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re par l'Universit\u00e9 de Stanford et le Global Crop Diversity Trust a averti qu'd'ici 2050, les conditions de culture dans la plupart des pays africains seraient plus chaudes que n'importe quelle ann\u00e9e enregistr\u00e9e et que de nombreuses vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de ma\u00efs actuellement cultiv\u00e9es ne seraient plus viables. Une autre \u00e9tude de l'Institut international de recherche sur l'\u00e9levage (ILRI) a averti qu'un \u00e9chec de la transition vers un ma\u00efs tol\u00e9rant \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse pourrait r\u00e9duire les rendements dans toute la r\u00e9gion jusqu'\u00e0 une tonne par hectare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Une partie des nouvelles semences de ma\u00efs tol\u00e9rant la s\u00e9cheresse arrive d\u00e9j\u00e0 dans les champs des agriculteurs. Cette ann\u00e9e seulement, quatre nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es par les obtenteurs de l'IITA et du gouvernement du Ghana qui sont \u00e0 la fois tol\u00e9rantes \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse et r\u00e9sistantes \u00e0 la mauvaise herbe parasitaire <em>Striga<\/em> ont officiellement sortis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L'\u00e9tude du CIMMYT et de l'IITA a examin\u00e9 les tendances pass\u00e9es de l'adoption des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s am\u00e9lior\u00e9es de ma\u00efs et a averti qu'il pourrait y avoir de grandes variations dans le rythme auquel les agriculteurs passent au ma\u00efs tol\u00e9rant \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse. Par exemple, les taux d'adoption devraient atteindre 85 % au Kenya et en Zambie, mais seulement 20 % au B\u00e9nin, 30 % au Mali et 27 % au Mozambique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c Il est tr\u00e8s important que tous les acteurs de la cha\u00eene de valeur coordonnent leurs efforts afin de relever les d\u00e9fis qui, par le pass\u00e9, ont rendu tr\u00e8s difficile l'acc\u00e8s de nombreux agriculteurs africains \u00e0 des semences de vari\u00e9t\u00e9s am\u00e9lior\u00e9es \u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Wilfred Mwangi, directeur associ\u00e9 du programme mondial sur le ma\u00efs du CIMMYT et responsable du projet DTMA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selon Mwangi, les agriculteurs adopteront une nouvelle vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de culture si elle offre des avantages \u00e9vidents. Mais ils se heurtent toujours \u00e0 des obstacles pour obtenir des semences am\u00e9lior\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c Au fil des ans, de nombreux agriculteurs d'Afrique subsaharienne ont continu\u00e9 \u00e0 cultiver des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de ma\u00efs anciennes, \u00e0 faible rendement et inadapt\u00e9es, malgr\u00e9 la disponibilit\u00e9 de vari\u00e9t\u00e9s plus r\u00e9centes et plus performantes \u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Mwangi. \u201c Cela s'explique en partie par le fait qu'ils ne connaissent pas ces nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s ou qu'ils ne peuvent pas obtenir de cr\u00e9dit pour acheter des semences. De nombreux agriculteurs sont d\u00e9courag\u00e9s d'acheter des semences parce qu'ils ne peuvent pas vendre leur exc\u00e9dent de c\u00e9r\u00e9ales \u00e0 des prix int\u00e9ressants ; d'autres vivent hors de port\u00e9e des entreprises semenci\u00e8res commerciales. \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><b>Nourrir les familles d'agriculteurs dans les zones arides du Malawi<\/b><\/em><br>Au Malawi, l\u2019impact du projet DTMA commence d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e0 se faire sentir dans les champs et sur les finances des agriculteurs. Par exemple, Bamusi Stambuli estime qu\u2019il \u00e9conomisera 1 433 dollars am\u00e9ricains sur 12 mois en cultivant une vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de ma\u00efs tol\u00e9rante \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse mise au point par le CIMMYT  et des s\u00e9lectionneurs de la station de recherche de Chitedze, au Malawi. Cette ann\u00e9e, les rendements de ma\u00efs de Stambuli avec cette vari\u00e9t\u00e9 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e8s de deux fois sup\u00e9rieurs \u00e0 ceux d\u2019autres vari\u00e9t\u00e9s locales courantes. \u2019 Je vais d\u00e9sormais pouvoir nourrir ma famille pendant 12 mois \u201c, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Stambuli, qui a sept enfants et cinq petits-enfants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c Le climat change, la pluviom\u00e9trie diminue et la m\u00e9t\u00e9o dicte d\u00e9sormais quelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s les cultivateurs plantent et, par cons\u00e9quent, quelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s les entreprises semenci\u00e8res produisent \u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Dellings Phiri, directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de Seed Co. Malawi, une grande entreprise semenci\u00e8re de la r\u00e9gion australe de l'Afrique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deux vari\u00e9t\u00e9s lanc\u00e9es au Malawi en 2009 \u2014 ZM 309 et ZM 523 \u2014 sont particuli\u00e8rement adapt\u00e9es aux zones sujettes \u00e0 la s\u00e9cheresse o\u00f9 les sols sont infertiles. Introduites par des agents de vulgarisation locaux aupr\u00e8s des agriculteurs de la r\u00e9gion de Balaka, ces nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s ont produit de bons rendements dans des parcelles de d\u00e9monstration. Les agriculteurs affirment que le ZM 309 et le ZM 523 produisent plus de ma\u00efs, m\u00fbrissent plus t\u00f4t et sont meilleurs pour \u00eatre r\u00e9duits en farine que d'autres vari\u00e9t\u00e9s commerciales populaires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Localement, le ZM 523 est connu sous le nom de \u201c Mwayi \u201d, terme chichewa qui signifie \u201c chanceux \u201d. Le ZM 309 est appel\u00e9 \u201c Msunga banja \u201d, ce qui signifie \u201c celui qui prend soin de la famille ou la nourrit \u201d.
