La Fondation Bill &amp; Melinda Gates et le D\u00e9partement britannique pour le d\u00e9veloppement international (DFID) investissent $25,2 millions pour am\u00e9liorer la productivit\u00e9 de cette culture de base et renforcer les capacit\u00e9s humaines et techniques en mati\u00e8re de s\u00e9lection v\u00e9g\u00e9tale en Afrique subsaharienne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le projet d'une dur\u00e9e de cinq ans est dirig\u00e9 par l'Universit\u00e9 Cornell, avec cinq institutions partenaires : le National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI) en Ouganda, le National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI) au Nig\u00e9ria, l'Institut international d'agriculture tropicale (IITA) au Nig\u00e9ria, le Boyce Thompson Institute (BTI) for Plant Research \u00e0 New York, et le Joint Genome Institute du D\u00e9partement de l'\u00c9nergie des \u00c9tats-Unis, rattach\u00e9 au laboratoire national Lawrence Berkeley, en Californie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c Les partenaires du projet d'am\u00e9lioration g\u00e9n\u00e9tique du manioc de nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration utiliseront une approche de pointe en mati\u00e8re d'am\u00e9lioration des plantes, connue sous le nom de s\u00e9lection g\u00e9nomique, pour am\u00e9liorer la productivit\u00e9 du manioc pour le XXIe si\u00e8cle \u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Ronnie Coffman, professeur d'am\u00e9lioration des plantes et de g\u00e9n\u00e9tique \u00e0 Cornell, directeur des programmes internationaux et chercheur principal de cette subvention multipartenaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c Un soutien accru pour le renforcement des capacit\u00e9s de recherche en Afrique et l'exploitation des technologies novatrices sont essentiels pour am\u00e9liorer la productivit\u00e9 agricole globale et la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire des populations pauvres \u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Yona Baguma, coordinateur de projet pour le NaCRRI, qui vise \u00e0 lib\u00e9rer le potentiel du manioc en Afrique et \u00e0 mobiliser toute une nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de producteurs de manioc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c Next Generation Cassava offre une formidable opportunit\u00e9 d'exploiter la puissance de la science moderne pour fournir plus rapidement les meilleures vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de manioc aux petits agriculteurs \u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Chiedozie Egesi, directeur adjoint du NRCRI et responsable de l'am\u00e9lioration du manioc, qui s'emploie \u00e0 biofortifier le manioc en micronutriments essentiels et \u00e0 le rendre plus nutritif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La s\u00e9lection du manioc est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement un processus long ; il faut pr\u00e8s d'une d\u00e9cennie pour multiplier et diffuser une nouvelle vari\u00e9t\u00e9. La s\u00e9lection g\u00e9nomique peut raccourcir les cycles de s\u00e9lection, fournir une \u00e9valuation plus pr\u00e9cise au stade des plantules et donner aux obtenteurs la possibilit\u00e9 d'\u00e9valuer un nombre beaucoup plus grand de clones sans avoir \u00e0 les planter dans le milieu cible. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la s\u00e9lection g\u00e9nomique, de nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de manioc pourraient \u00eatre pr\u00eates en seulement six ans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c Le projet Next Generation Cassava donnera aux obtenteurs en Afrique acc\u00e8s aux technologies d'am\u00e9lioration des plantes les plus avanc\u00e9es afin de fournir plus rapidement des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s am\u00e9lior\u00e9es aux agriculteurs \u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Peter Kulakow, sp\u00e9cialiste de l'am\u00e9lioration du manioc et g\u00e9n\u00e9ticien \u00e0 l'IITA, l'un des trois instituts partenaires du projet bas\u00e9s en Afrique. \u201c Ce projet permettra de garantir que la recherche g\u00e9n\u00e9tique sur le manioc soit au m\u00eame niveau que celle concernant d'autres cultures vivri\u00e8res de premier plan telles que le bl\u00e9, le riz, le ma\u00efs et la pomme de terre. \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les petits agriculteurs africains produisent plus de la moiti\u00e9 du manioc mondial, soit environ 86 millions de tonnes sur plus de 10 millions d'hectares. Cette plante ligneuse et r\u00e9sistante devrait \u00eatre l'une des rares cultures \u00e0 b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier du changement climatique. Elle n\u00e9cessite peu d'intrants et peut tol\u00e9rer la s\u00e9cheresse, les sols pauvres et un stockage souterrain \u00e0 long terme. \u00c0 la fois culture de rente et culture de subsistance, les racines tub\u00e9reuses de cet arbuste ligneux vivace sont transform\u00e9es, consomm\u00e9es fra\u00eeches, bouillies ou crues, et mang\u00e9es par les hommes ainsi que par les animaux comme source bon march\u00e9 de glucides. Aucun autre continent ne d\u00e9pend autant du manioc pour nourrir sa population que l'Afrique, o\u00f9 500 millions de personnes en consomment quotidiennement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L'\u00e9quipe du manioc \u00e0 Cornell comprend \u00e9galement le responsable scientifique Jean-Luc Jannink, g\u00e9n\u00e9ticien de la recherche au d\u00e9partement de l'Agriculture des \u00c9tats-Unis et professeur adjoint au d\u00e9partement d'am\u00e9lioration des plantes et de g\u00e9n\u00e9tique, ainsi que Tim Setter, directeur du d\u00e9partement des sciences des cultures et des sols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les partenaires partageront les donn\u00e9es, l'expertise et les informations sur le manioc sur un site Web accessible au public (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cassavabase.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.cassavabase.org<\/a>) d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 par Lukas Mueller de BTI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En plus d'utiliser les derni\u00e8res informations g\u00e9nomiques issues du s\u00e9quen\u00e7age du manioc pour am\u00e9liorer la productivit\u00e9 et le rendement, les partenaires du projet int\u00e9greront la diversit\u00e9 du germoplasme de manioc d'Am\u00e9rique du Sud dans les programmes de s\u00e9lection africains, formeront la prochaine g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de phytog\u00e9n\u00e9ticiens et am\u00e9lioreront les infrastructures des institutions africaines.
