{"id":13080,"date":"2026-06-20T12:26:21","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:26:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/news-item\/afdb-and-researchers-launch-63m-initiative-to-lift-africans-out-of-poverty\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T12:26:21","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:26:21","slug":"afdb-and-researchers-launch-63m-initiative-to-lift-africans-out-of-poverty","status":"publish","type":"news-item","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/afdb-and-researchers-launch-63m-initiative-to-lift-africans-out-of-poverty\/","title":{"rendered":"La BAD et des chercheurs lancent l&#x27;initiative \u00ab $63M \u00bb pour sortir les Africains de la pauvret\u00e9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/newint.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/image_gallery-15-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9821\" src=\"http:\/\/newint.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/image_gallery-15-2.jpg\" alt=\"image_gallery-15\" width=\"250\" height=\"161\" \/><\/a>The African Development Bank (AfDB)  and researchers today launched the US$63.24 million AfDB-funded initiative that aims to raise agricultural productivity  and also lift millions of Africans out of poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 5-year, multi-CGIAR center initiative known as \u201cSupport to Agricultural Research for Development of Strategic Crops in Africa\u201d (SARD-SC) is a research, science,  and technology development initiative aimed at enhancing the productivity  and income derived from cassava, maize, rice,  and wheat \u2013 four of the six commodities that African Heads of States, through the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Program, have defined as strategic crops for Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the launch of the initiative in Ibadan, Nigeria, the Director General of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Dr Nteranya Sanginga called on researchers to deliver \u2018quick impact\u2019 to justify the investments in research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe should begin to demonstrate impact in the next two years using available technologies already developed. Everything in SARD-SC is about impact  and not only writing scientific papers,\u201d Dr Sanginga said. The SARD-SC Project comes at an opportune time when food security  and nutrition are high on the national agenda of the AfDB Regional Member Countries (RMCs), as rising food prices push millions of people into extreme hunger  and poverty. The SARD-SC allows \u2013 for the first time ever in a single project \u2013 a continental coverage of the food security challenges in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we intend to achieve goes beyond food security. We are looking at boosting incomes  and reducing poverty in Africa,\u201c said Mr Ousmane Dore, Resident Representative, Nigeria Field Office of the AfDB, who launched the event on behalf of AfDB\u2019s President, Dr Donald Kaberuka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cApart from supporting research with broad sectoral  and\/or economic-wide objectives, the social impact of this intervention is significant. This is underscored by the all-inclusive nature of the project beneficiaries: farmers\u2019 groups, youth, private sector, policy makers, rural entrepreneurs, national agricultural research  and extension systems (NARES), community based organizations,  and nongovernmental organizations,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project, which will run until 2016, will be co-implemented by three Africa-based CGIAR centers: IITA, Africa Rice Center,  and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas. IITA is also the Executing Agency of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another CGIAR center \u2013 the International Food Policy Research Institute \u2013 a specialized technical agency, will support the other three centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Kenton Dashiell, Deputy Director General (Partnerships &amp; Capacity Development), said the distinctive nature of the project offered an opportunity to improve food security in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also called on partners  and researchers to work towards building a new  and better future for Africa using the project as a tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>###<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pour toute information, veuillez contacter :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Godwin Atser, <a>g.atser@cgiar.org<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>CGIAR is a global agriculture research partnership for a food secure future.
