{"id":13764,"date":"2026-06-20T12:30:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/news-item\/cgiar-centers-join-efforts-to-launch-an-agronomy-research-and-innovation-initiative-to-support-agricultural-productivity-growth-in-the-global-south\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T21:36:19","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T21:36:19","slug":"cgiar-centers-join-efforts-to-launch-an-agronomy-research-and-innovation-initiative-to-support-agricultural-productivity-growth-in-the-global-south","status":"publish","type":"news-item","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/cgiar-centers-join-efforts-to-launch-an-agronomy-research-and-innovation-initiative-to-support-agricultural-productivity-growth-in-the-global-south\/","title":{"rendered":"CGIAR Centers join efforts to launch an Agronomy Research and Innovation initiative to support agricultural productivity growth in the global South"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nine CGIAR centers are coming together to set up an initiative that will help deliver agronomic solutions at scale to drive sustainable productivity growth under climate change for smallholder farmers. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgiar.org\/\">CGIAR<\/a> centers, supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/bigdata.cgiar.org\/\">Big Data Platform<\/a>, will launch the Excellence in Agronomy 2030 initiative during this year\u2019s African Green Revolution Forum (<a href=\"https:\/\/agrf.org\/\">AGRF<\/a>) summit to be held virtually on 7 September 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21419 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/EIA-slider.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"750\" \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Excellence in Agronomy 2030 (EiA 2030) initiative will assist millions of smallholder farmers to intensify their production systems while preserving key ecosystem services under the threat of climate change. This initiative, co-created with various scaling partners, represents the collective resolve of CGIAR\u2019s agronomy programs to transform the world\u2019s food systems through demand- and data-driven agronomy research for development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EiA 2030 will combine big data analytics, new sensing technologies, geospatial decision tools, and farming systems research to improve spatially explicit agronomic recommendations in response to demand from scaling partners. Our science will integrate the principles of Sustainable Intensification and be informed by climate change considerations, behavioral economics, and scaling pathways at the national and regional levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2-year Incubation Phase of EiA 2030 is funded by the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation. The project will demonstrate the added value of demand-driven R&amp;D, supported by novel data and analytics and increased cooperation among centers, in support of a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgiar.org\/impact\/one-cgiar\/\">One CGIAR<\/a>\u2019 agronomy initiative aiming at the sustainable intensification of farming systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking on the upcoming launch, the IITA R4D Director for Natural Resource Management, Dr Bernard Vanlauwe, who facilitates the implementation of the Incubation Phase, said that \u201cEiA 2030 is premised on demand-driven agronomic solutions to develop recommendations that match the needs and objectives of the end users\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senior Program Officer from the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation Dr Christian Witt lauded the initiative as a cornerstone for the One CGIAR. \u201cIt is ingenious to have a platform like EiA 2030 that looks at solutions that have worked in different settings on other crops and whether they can be applied in a different setting and on different crops,\u201d Dr Witt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Martin Kropff, Director General of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, spoke about the initiative\u2019s goals of becoming the leading platform for next generation agronomy in the Global South, not only responding to the demand of public and private sector, but also increasing efficiencies in the development and delivery of solutions through increased collaboration cooperation and cross-learning between CGIAR centers and within the broader agronomy R&amp;D ecosystem including agroecological approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the EiA 2030 launch, representatives from partner organizations and CGIAR centers will give presentations on different aspects of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CGIAR centers that are involved in EiA include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africarice.org\">AfricaRice<\/a>, International Center for Tropical Agriculture (<a href=\"https:\/\/ciat.cgiar.org\">CIAT<\/a>), International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cimmyt.org\">CIMMYT<\/a>), Centre international de la pomme de terre (<a href=\"https:\/\/cipotato.org\/cgiar\">CIP<\/a>), International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icarda.org\">ICARDA<\/a>), World Agroforestry Center (<a href=\"http:\/\/worldagroforestry.org\/\">ICRAF<\/a>), International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icrisat.org\">CIRDI<\/a>), Institut international d'agriculture tropicale (<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\">IITA<\/a>), and International Rice Research Institute (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irri.org\/\">IRRI<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
