Acute poisoning\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0consuming foods with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">too<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">high levels of aflatoxin can lead to instant death. Chronic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0long-term<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0exposure<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0consuming foods with above<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">le<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">allowable safe levels can result in lowered immunity, low birth weight<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and irreversible stunting in children<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. People exposed to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">aflatoxin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can also develop<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0liver cancer.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Because of the health risks, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">flatoxin also causes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">loss in trade revenues\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">when<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0products\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fail to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0meet the required standards. According to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0le<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aflatoxinpartnership.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Partnership for Aflatoxin Control in Africa<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PACA<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Africa loses an estimated US$670 million in rejected export trade annually due to contamination by aflatoxin.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_21435\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21435\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21435 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Aflatoxin-control-2.png\" alt=\"IITA and regional grains body to work towards producing aflatoxin-free grain for health and trade \" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21435\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IITA&#8217;s Aflasafe&#x2122; factory.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MoU<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, IITA and EAGC, a membership organization that brings together key players across the grain value chain in Eastern and Southern Africa, will promote best practices and proven technologies to manage aflatoxin.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">integrated aflatoxin management strategy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">include<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0promoting the use of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aflasafe.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Aflasafe&#x2122;<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an innovative, safe, and natural product that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">substantially<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reduces aflatoxin contamination in maize and groundnut.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The technology<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">initi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ally\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">developed by the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">United States Department of Agriculture &#8211; Agricultural Research Service<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(USDA-ARS)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0est<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0used<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0widely in the US. IITA, in partnership with the USDA, has successfully adapted this technology for use in many countries in Africa.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aflatoxin contamination is a serious food safety issue in sub-Saharan Africa and also a major impediment to trade.
