T<\/span>he Permanent Secretary<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>inistry\u00a0<\/span>o<\/span>f\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>griculture, Tanzania, has <\/span>recognize<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0le\u00a0<\/span>importance of research conducted by\u00a0<\/span>IITA<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and partners to address challenges in the horticulture sector as well as the\u00a0<\/span>presence and work\u00a0<\/span>done by\u00a0<\/span>IITA\u00a0<\/span>in Tanzania in general. The PS said he was well aware of the Institute\u2019s work in the country and termed it\u00a0<\/span>excellent work toward transforming the agricultural sector.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PS,\u00a0Mr\u00a0Gerald\u00a0Kusaya, said this while attending an event at the\u00a0<\/span>World Vegetable Center East and Southern Africa, Arusha Region, Tanzania<\/span>, where he was the guest of honor o<\/span>n 7 November 2020<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PS\u00a0<\/span>acknowledged the importance of\u00a0the ongoing\u00a0research\u00a0<\/span>dans<\/span>\u00a0the horticultural field<\/span>\u00a0and said\u00a0<\/span>it was important for research institutions to prioritize and develop work plans that respond to the country<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s Agricultural Sector Development Strategy-II.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/span>We are working with many partners, including farmers, to ensure the horticultural sector<\/span>\u00a0est<\/span>\u00a0sustainable and beneficial to the communities. Research\u00a0<\/span>institutes<\/span>\u00a0are critical. Our target\u00a0<\/span>est<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00e0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>ensure the research results reach farmers strengthening the<\/span>\u00a0accessibility and availability of the extension officers\u00a0<\/span>to support farmers<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>n vegetable\u00a0<\/span>production,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0said the Hon. Permanent Secretary<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

IITA\u00a0participation at the event was led by\u00a0<\/span>Prof.\u00a0<\/span>Bekunda Mateete<\/span><\/a>, IITA-Chief Scientist and the Africa Research in Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation (Africa RISING) Eastern and Southern Africa Project Coordinator<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>who r<\/span>epresent<\/span>ed\u00a0<\/span>IITA management<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Mateete,\u00a0<\/span>while briefing the PS on IITA activities in the country and\u00a0<\/span>the joint effort\u00a0<\/span>with the World Vegetable Center\u00a0<\/span>to enhance healthy vegetable production<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>acknowledged\u00a0<\/span>le\u00a0<\/span>effort the Ministry of Agriculture toward developing the agricultural sector in the country<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his speech, the\u00a0WorldVeg\u00a0Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Director, Dr Gabriel\u00a0Rugalema<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0acknowledged the excellent partnership between the research institutes<\/span>\u00a0in the country<\/span>, including IITA,\u00a0<\/span>le\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>anzania\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>gricultural\u00a0<\/span>R<\/span>esearch\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>nstitute (TARI)<\/span>, and other research centers, in promoting sustainable<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0best technologies<\/span>\u00a0\u00e0\u00a0<\/span>boost fruit and vegetable<\/span>\u00a0production<\/span>\u00a0in the country while addressing pest and disease challenges and market issues.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event included a series of activities, including\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>tour<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0<\/span>laboratories and farms where vegetable and fruit experiments are conducte<\/span>d,<\/span>\u00a0followed by discussions with the staff about work-related cross-cutting issues.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0launching\u00a0of the event was attended by staff from\u00a0WorldVeg, including research scientists, the management and others, partners from TARI, and representatives from the IITA.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
