Since then, the I<\/span>nstitute has\u00a0<\/span>participated in the unfolding plans and is strategically<\/span>\u00a0positioned to contribute to the One-CGIAR agenda in\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>ub-Saharan Africa.\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>ignific<\/span>ant developments have been taking place at IITA\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0 CGIAR<\/span>, with bigger plans for 2021.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\nFollowing discussions with the Directors General, the CGIAR Executive Management Team (EMT) formed Design Working Groups in December 2020 to provide input and advice\u00a0<\/span>on<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>designing<\/span>\u00a0the new CGIAR operational model. The groups consist of a cross<\/span>\u2013<\/span>section of Directors General and staff, covering the three functional areas\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0the new operational structure: Research and Delivery, Institutional Strategy and Systems, and Global Engagement and Innovation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n

IITA Director General, Dr Nteranya Sanginga.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nOn 31 March<\/span>\u00a02021<\/span>, the appointment of Global Directors under the three functional areas, Regional Directors, and country-level leads<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0will be made from among existing center Human Resources<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The CGIAR EMT emphasi<\/span>z<\/span>ed their confidence in the capabilities of the IITA HR team to fulfil these responsibilities on behalf of the One CGIAR, especially in Africa.<\/span>\u00a0The EMT is<\/span>\u00a0also\u00a0<\/span>considering<\/span>\u00a0leveraging on IITA\u2019s facilities, HR, and partnerships in certain areas, to build on existing achievements toward a strong and respected One CGIAR for Africa and beyond.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\nI<\/span>t would be\u00a0<\/span>prudent<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for the EMT and the System Board to leverage IITA in its leadership role for the\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>ontinent to benefit the One CGIAR. Building on IITA\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0current standing\u00a0<\/span>with governments and investment banks<\/span>, IITA<\/span>\u00a0can grow support for the One CGIAR operating in\u00a0<\/span>Afrique subsaharienne<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>through its Regional and Country Alignment dimension. Also, IITA\u2019s work cuts across the three science groups of the One CGIAR structure<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0including Genetic Innovation, Resilient Agri-food System<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and Systems Transformation.\u00a0<\/span>Given<\/span>\u00a0IITA\u2019s current staff numbers and available expertise, the many results obtained in agronomy, plant health, value addition, and its excellent relationships with the donor community investing in these research areas, the One CGIAR would benefit from IITA facilitating the Resilient Agri-food Systems Science Group. This is because the Science Group is strong at IITA and these capabilities can be deployed for integrated initiatives and bilateral projects to transform smallholder farming systems.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\nIn his brief, the DG also mentioned that s<\/span>ince the advent of<\/span>\u00a0the COVID-19 pandemic, IITA has recorded 53<\/span>\u00a0cases at its Nigeria station\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>no\u00a0<\/span>recorded\u00a0<\/span>deaths. Some cases have also been iden<\/span>tified in Zambia and DRC and\u00a0<\/span>without fatalities. IITA continues to practice all the health measures recommended by the respective governments and\u00a0<\/span>le\u00a0<\/span>World Health Organi<\/span>z<\/span>ation<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>The pandemic affected the financial health of IITA<\/span>, which led\u00a0<\/span>the Institute\u00a0<\/span>to adopt\u00a0<\/span>a 2-pronged approach to manage the situation<\/span>\u2014<\/span>an aggressive resource mobilization drive<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and a cost reduction exercise involving the reduction of staff salar<\/span>ies<\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span>seven<\/span>\u00a0months.<\/span>\u00a0The situation was judic<\/span>iously managed within\u00a0<\/span>four<\/span>\u00a0months and the Institute\u00a0<\/span>resumed<\/span>\u00a0paying full salar<\/span>ies<\/span>\u00a0\u00e0<\/span>\u00a0its<\/span>\u00a0staff.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\nFurthermore, r<\/span>esource mobilization with development banks and country loans w<\/span>as<\/span>\u00a0actively pursued<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and positive results were achieved with the\u00a0<\/span>Banque mondiale<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(W<\/span>B),\u00a0<\/span>Africa Development Bank<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(AfDB)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0et\u00a0<\/span>International Fund for Agricultural Development<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(IFAD). Due to this achievement, IITA has a gross revenue projected at $139 million for 2021. This is<\/span>\u00a0the largest budget in IITA<\/span>\u00a0history, with a surplus of $0.5 m<\/span>illion<\/span>. Another major development is that\u00a0<\/span>IITA<\/span>\u00a0just signed a\u00a0<\/span>significant<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>project on Zero hunger with IFAD for Nigeria and Togo. A major project is expected from the World Bank for\u00a0<\/span>le\u00a0<\/span>Democratic Republic of Congo. Also, AfDB, IFAD<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and IITA are working together on the African Head<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0of State summit on food security\u00a0<\/span>that will take place in<\/span>\u00a0the second quarter of 2021.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\nAccording to IITA DG\u00a0<\/span>Nteranya<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Sanginga<\/span><\/a>, if the operating results for 2020 are sufficiently positive, the management intends to reimburse staff one month\u2019s salary from the 4 months deducted. \u201cThe operating results would<\/span>\u00a0only be known by mid-February, and\u00a0<\/span>if positive, the reimbursement will be implemented by<\/span>\u00a0le<\/span>\u00a0end of February,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Sanginga<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
