Knowing that achieving this goal is improbable in unequal, marginalized, and vulnerable groups, IITA developed a policy to ensure a gender-balanced workplace and formed a gender science network to promote gender interventions through research.\n<figure id=\"attachment_22437\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22437\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22437 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Women-in-leadership1.jpg\" alt=\"Women in leadership: Promoting an equal future\" width=\"920\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hilde Koper, giving the opening remark<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nTo celebrate IWD,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mBY5pfIIoP8\">IITA held a symposium on 8 March<\/a>, adopting the universal theme: \u201cWomen in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world\u201d. The purpose was to celebrate women\u2019s achievement and inspire and promote their participation in leadership through discussions on the contributions of women and men to an equal future, especially in the new normal.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/soresougrynoma\/\">Zainatou Sore<\/a>, Head of Capacity Development Office, moderated the meeting.\n\nIn her welcome address,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/mendoza-lilian\/\">Lilian Mendoza<\/a>, Head of Human Resources Service, noted that IWD celebrates women\u2019s achievements in various fields. During this celebration, IITA recognizes and appreciates all women for their valuable contributions to the Institute. She also highlighted how the \u00a0women speakers would be sharing the challenges and opportunities in their career paths and \u00a0their journey to leadership. In contrast, the male speakers would share their contributions in supporting women to attain leadership positions. \u201cI appreciate and congratulate all the fabulous women in IITA,\u201d she said.\n\nIn her remarks,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/koper-hilde\/\">Hilde Koper<\/a>, DDG Corporate Services, relayed an incident in her secondary school and how it pushed her to start speaking up for gender equality from the age of 14, even though she grew up in a family where both genders were treated equally. \u201cHaving both men and women is what makes a good leadership team. It is important to keep fighting for equal rights and increase the percentage of women in the workforce,\u201d Koper said.\n<figure id=\"attachment_22434\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22434\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22434 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Women-in-leadership2.jpg\" alt=\"Women in leadership: Promoting an equal future\" width=\"920\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22434\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DG Nteranya Sanginga, speaking on the impact of IITA women on the Institute.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nDirecteur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de l'IITA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/sanginga-nteranya\/\">Nteranya Sanginga<\/a>\u00a0gave a keynote stating that we do not all have to be in leadership positions to make a difference at work and in society. Every staff member can play vital leadership roles at their level. He gave examples of young women such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/diebiru-ojo-elohor-mercy\/\">Mercy Elohor Diebiru-Ojo<\/a>\u00a0of GoSeed, Bolanle Larinde of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.startthemearly.org\/\">Start Them Early Program (STEP)<\/a>, et\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/kapinga-regina\/\">Regina Kapinga<\/a>\u00a0in IITA Uganda, who have made an impact and, as a result, made their way through to leadership positions. \u201cLeadership is not being in big positions but being able to effect changes in whatever position you are in,\u201d he said.\n\nIITA Gender Specialist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/steven-cole\/\">Steven Cole<\/a>\u00a0spoke on the importance of Gender Diversity and Inclusion (GDI) to advance women in the workplace and society. He highlighted how critically important it is for women to play significant roles in government, the workplace, and the community as everyone continues to respond and gradually recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Cole also noted that the structured inequality in society limits women from taking up leadership positions, which is unacceptable. \u201cAs we celebrate women, it is important to ask these questions\u2014how are you removing the barrier in the workplace to ensure that IITA harnesses the power of women to realize an equal and inclusive workplace in the future? Are you standing on the sidelines waiting for others to act, or are you in the game and making sure you are doing your part and making sure there is a positive change?\u201d he questioned.\n<figure id=\"attachment_22435\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22435\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22435 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Women-in-leadership3.jpg\" alt=\"Women in leadership: Promoting an equal future\" width=\"920\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22435\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IWD symposium onsite participants in a family photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nThe main speakers\u2014eight females and two males \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/titilayo-falade\/\">Titilayo Falade<\/a>, Diana Kirungi, Tamara Mwansa,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/kulakow-peter\/\">Peter Kulakow<\/a>, Beatrice Bachwenkizi, Traore Fanta, Rose Ndango, Catine Gersonia, Omotayo Ayo-Afolabi, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/abdoulaye-tahirou\/\">Tahirou Abdoulaye<\/a>\u2014shared their challenges and opportunities\u2019 stories.\n\nThe IITA International School presented a video that featured \u201cTalking Heads,\u201d with female students interviewing women leaders within and outside the Institute to encourage young girls.\n\nIn the vote of thanks, Human Resources Manager Lade Oke thanked everyone for joining in the event to celebrate women.
