Hailemariam Desalegn, and the former Tanzania President H.E. Jakaya Kikwete, who is also an AGRA \u00a0board member and senior staff of the organization. H.E. Desalegn was in the country to familiarize himself with AGRA\u2019s work in Tanzania and meet their partners, such as IITA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Director of IITA-Eastern Africa hub, <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/tripathi-leena\/\">Leena Tripathi<\/a>, received the delegation. In a brief meeting, she shared IITA\u2019s work in Tanzania and Eastern Africa, including projects in collaboration with AGRA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_23199\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23199\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23199 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/AGRA-Board-Chair-p1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">James Legg (left) receiving H.E. Desalegn thanked IITA for hosting AGRA in Tanzania and noted the need to increase collaboration between the two organizations and with the One CGIAR. He also highlighted the importance of advances in science to find solutions to the continent\u2019s challenges, especially in gene editing. He emphasized the importance of scientists being at the forefront of communicating the technology and its potential in breeding to the public and not politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the meeting, the visitors toured the Molecular Biology Lab. <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/legg-james\/\">James Legg<\/a>, IITA Plant Health Scientist and Plant Vector Entomologist, and his team described IITA\u2019s research on two deadly viral diseases\u2014cassava mosaic and cassava brown streak, which are constraints to cassava production in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Massoud Amour, a research assistant, described current work to control the whitefly vector of cassava viruses, using bio-based strategies, including the use of biopesticides and essential oils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legg also demonstrated the NURU app that helps farmers diagnose diseases affecting their cassava plants correctly. It was developed by Penn State University\/Plant Village and IITA, with support from CGIAR\u2019s BigData Platform and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtb.cgiar.org\">Roots, Tubers and Bananas<\/a> Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_23200\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23200\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23200 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/AGRA-Board-Chair-p2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Demonstrating the NURU app for diagnosing diseases to H.E. Kikwete, at IITA\u2019s Molecular lab.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dignitaries were impressed with the technology and urged for more efforts between the developers and IITA, working hand-in-hand with national agencies and the Ministry of Agriculture, to popularize this exciting new app in Tanzania and maximize its potential benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">H.E. Kikwete\u2019s last visit to IITA\u2019s Dar es Salaam campus was eight years ago when he inaugurated the new science building as the President of the United Republic of Tanzania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IITA and AGRA have been working together to commercialize cassava in Tanzania, including developing the country\u2019s national cassava strategy.
