{"id":13991,"date":"2026-06-20T12:31:54","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:31:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/news-item\/iita-partners-oyo-state-government-and-others-to-promote-agribusiness\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T21:34:38","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T21:34:38","slug":"iita-partners-oyo-state-government-and-others-to-promote-agribusiness","status":"publish","type":"news-item","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/iita-partners-oyo-state-government-and-others-to-promote-agribusiness\/","title":{"rendered":"IITA partners Oyo State government and others to promote agribusiness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/cgiar-my.sharepoint.com\/personal\/u_agha_cgiar_org\/Documents\/01.%20IITA%20News\/2612%20(25%20-%2029%20October)\/Oyo%20State%20Agribusiness%20Development%20Agency%20(OYSADA)\">Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA)<\/a>, the Oyo State Government collaborated with <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\">IITA<\/a> and other partners to organize a summit themed: \u201cOyo Agribusiness Summit 2021.\u201d The summit, which had some financial institutions and ambassadors from other countries in attendance, took place from 25 to 27 October and was a platform to showcase and promote agribusiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_23723\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23723\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23723 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITA-partners-Oyo-p3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oyo State is passionate about promoting agribusiness, according to Dr Debo Akande.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his welcome address, OYSADA Director General <a href=\"https:\/\/oysada.oyostate.gov.ng\/team\/dr-adebowale-akande\/\">Dr Adebowale Akande<\/a> highlighted Oyo State\u2019s passion for promoting agribusiness as it is \u201cthe way to go\u201d for economic development. Akande noted that Oyo State has adequate land for agriculture to meet the needs of the increasing population and growing middle class. \u201cWe will leverage the comparative agricultural advantage such as youth, talented workforce, and strategic location as a pathway to millions of consumers in domestic and regional markets to become sub-Saharan African agribusiness hub,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_23722\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23722\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23722 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITA-partners-Oyo-p2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DG Nteranya Sanginga highlighting some IITA activities tackling youth unemployment.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his remarks, IITA Director General <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/sanginga-nteranya\/\">Dr Nteranya Sanginga<\/a> spoke about unemployment as one of the challenges facing the Nigerian youth and how the different programs of IITA had changed the mindsets of teachers and youth by introducing them to value addition in agriculture. He also commended the Executive Governor of Oyo State, His Excellency <a href=\"https:\/\/seyimakinde.org\/about\/\">Seyi Makinde<\/a>, for promoting agribusiness in the State. He urged him \u201cto build a legacy by giving more support to the sector and young people to alleviate poverty and unemployment in the state and Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_23724\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23724\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23724 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITA-partners-Oyo-p1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23724\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Governor Seyi Makinde explaining the importance of agribusiness to Oyo State.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Governor Makinde gave a speech on \u201cRe-engineering Agribusiness in Development in Oyo State.\u201d He noted that business could be a catalyst for agriculture to lift people from poverty to prosperity. He highlighted the State\u2019s drive to increase agricultural investment through tax incentives that he expects to remain in place for many years. \u201cOyo State has vast arable land, and request people and investors to partner with the State to grow this investment to a mutual benefit,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Representing African Development Bank (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afdb.org\/en\">BAD<\/a>) President, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, AfDB Director for Agriculture and Agro-Allied Sector, Dr Martin Fregene, noted that improving agricultural development in Oyo State would make the State attractive to other states and countries. He highlighted competitiveness, a clustered ecosystem, local capacity building, and climate adaptation as attraction points for Oyo to consolidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_23725\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23725\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23725 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITA-partners-Oyo-p4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23725\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AfDB Director for Agriculture and Agro-Allied Sector, Dr Martin Fregene, highlighting the improvement of agricultural development in Oyo State.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Heirs Holdings Chairman Tony Elumelu, financing agriculture is a direct investment in poverty eradication and job creation. He further explained that agriculture is central to our development as a continent. He pledged his foundation\u2019s support in scaling up agribusiness in Oyo State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The summit had private sector leaders and government officials in attendance including, His Excellency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfat.gov.au\/about-us\/our-people\/homs\/high-commissioner-to-nigeria\">John Donnelly<\/a>, Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria; Her Excellency Emmanuelle Blatmann, French Ambassador to Nigeria; WEMA Bank CEO Ademola Adebise; First Bank Group Managing Director Dr Adesola Adeduntan; and representatives of the United Bank for Africa
