In the 2020\u20132021 season, the Institute set up monitoring plots, called \u201cdisease nurseries,\u201d at five sites in three countries\u2014Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda\u2014to screen for rust, frogeye leaf spot, and red leaf blotch diseases\u00a0as part of the Pan-African Soybean Variety Trials (PATs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six other nurseries will be established in three countries in southern Africa.\u00a0 Twenty-five soybean entries are being evaluated at each site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nurseries are designed with high disease-pressure conditions to efficiently confirm the varietal resistance to the diseases. The most resistant lines from these evaluations may be recommended for national breeding programs. They may also be advanced for registration and release for farmers to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_23860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23860\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23860\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Disease-nursery-p2-300x226.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IITA has set up monitoring plots to screen for soybean diseases under the Pan-African Soybean Variety Trials (PATs).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IITA and SIL\u2019s\u00a0Disease Management Team have also developed different resources on disease identification, impact, and management techniques, with preliminary data on the most resistant genotypes for soybean rust, red leaf blotch, and frogeye leaf spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resources are available on the Tropical Soybean Information Portal\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tropicalsoybean.com\">https:\/\/www.tropicalsoybean.com<\/a>.
