Connue sous le nom de \u2018 envelopper et planter \u2019, cette solution consiste \u00e0 enfermer les semences de pommes de terre, avant la plantation, dans un papier absorbant \u00e9pais fabriqu\u00e9 \u00e0 partir de la fibre des bananiers. Cette strat\u00e9gie offre aux plantes une barri\u00e8re protectrice contre les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts caus\u00e9s par le NKPT.<\/strong>\n\nCes r\u00e9sultats de recherche men\u00e9s par le Centre international d'physiologie et d'\u00e9cologie des insectes (icipe), l'Institut international d'agriculture tropicale (IITA) et l'Universit\u00e9 d'\u00c9tat de Caroline du Nord, aux \u00c9tats-Unis, en collaboration avec divers partenaires, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9s r\u00e9cemment dans Nature Sustainability (Lien de l'article : <a href=\"https:\/\/rdcu.be\/cHVSg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/rdcu.be\/cHVSg<\/a>). (Liens d'addition : <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/potato-farmers-conquer-devastating-worm-paper-made-bananas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article dans Science<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZEti_nJ80fs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">courte vid\u00e9o<\/a>)\n\n\u201c Au d\u00e9part, notre objectif \u00e9tait de d\u00e9terminer si la technologie \u2018 wrap and plant \u2019 pouvait contribuer \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer l\u2019application et l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 des n\u00e9maticides, ces agents chimiques utilis\u00e9s pour lutter contre les vers parasites qui endommagent les cultures, tels que les n\u00e9matodes \u201d, pr\u00e9cise Juliet Ochola (Kenya), qui a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 cette recherche dans le cadre de son master, achev\u00e9 en 2021, sous la supervision conjointe de l\u2019icipe et de l\u2019IITA alors qu\u2019elle \u00e9tait inscrite \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 Kenyatta, au Kenya.\n\nElle ajoute : \u201c Nous avons \u00e9tabli que, lorsqu\u2019il est impr\u00e9gn\u00e9 de doses ultra-faibles de n\u00e9maticides, le papier de banane permet aux produits chimiques d\u2019\u00eatre lib\u00e9r\u00e9s de mani\u00e8re lente et prolong\u00e9e, \u00e0 des concentrations tr\u00e8s faibles mais efficaces. Le papier facilite \u00e9galement l\u2019acheminement des n\u00e9maticides sp\u00e9cifiquement vers la zone racinaire des plants de pomme de terre, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire le site d\u2019infection des n\u00e9matodes, emp\u00eachant ainsi la contamination des zones et des organismes non cibl\u00e9s. \u201d\n\nComme l\u2019explique le professeur Baldwyn Torto, responsable de l\u2019unit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9cologie comportementale et chimique de l\u2019icipe, la d\u00e9couverte la plus significative de cette \u00e9tude est que, m\u00eame en l\u2019absence de n\u00e9maticides, la technologie \u2018 wrap and plant \u2019 prot\u00e8ge la pomme de terre contre les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts caus\u00e9s par le n\u00e9matode du collet de la pomme de terre (PCN). \u201c Nous avons \u00e9tabli que la fibre de banane poss\u00e8de des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s spongieuses uniques. Ainsi, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un processus scientifiquement appel\u00e9 \u2018 liaison hydrog\u00e8ne \u2019, le papier \u2018 wrap and plant \u2019 est capable d\u2019absorber et de fixer physiquement les signaux chimiques critiques lib\u00e9r\u00e9s par les cultures de pommes de terre qui permettent au n\u00e9matode PCN d\u2019\u00e9clore, de localiser et d\u2019infecter les racines de la plante. Nous avons confirm\u00e9 ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne en r\u00e9cup\u00e9rant ces substances chimiques dans le papier \u201d, pr\u00e9cise-t-il.\n\nLes caract\u00e9ristiques de la fibre de banane conf\u00e8rent au papier \u2018 wrap and plant \u2019 une densit\u00e9, une rigidit\u00e9 et une robustesse telles qu\u2019il reste intact dans le sol tout en permettant aux racines de la plante de germer et de se d\u00e9velopper. Bien que ce papier soit r\u00e9sistant, il est \u00e9galement biod\u00e9gradable et finit par se d\u00e9composer.\n\nD\u00e9tect\u00e9 pour la premi\u00e8re fois au Kenya en 2015, le n\u00e9matode PCN s\u2019est d\u00e9sormais largement propag\u00e9 dans les principales r\u00e9gions de culture de la pomme de terre du pays, ainsi qu\u2019au Rwanda et en Ouganda. \u201c Nos estimations montrent que les n\u00e9matodes PCN entra\u00eenent une baisse de la production de pommes de terre de plus de 60 %, et les projections laissent entrevoir un sc\u00e9nario encore plus sombre \u201d, note le professeur Danny Coyne, sp\u00e9cialiste de la sant\u00e9 des sols \u00e0 l\u2019IITA. \u201c L\u2019\u00e9tude actuelle d\u00e9montre que le papier \u2018wrap and plant\u2019, qu\u2019il contienne ou non des n\u00e9maticides, et en fonction des pratiques de chaque agriculteur, peut multiplier par cinq le rendement des pommes de terre. Cela s\u2019explique par la pr\u00e9vention des d\u00e9g\u00e2ts caus\u00e9s par les PCN ainsi que par d\u2019autres esp\u00e8ces de n\u00e9matodes. \u201d\n\nLa technologie \u2018 wrap and plant \u2019 constitue un levier prometteur pour la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire et nutritionnelle ainsi que pour les revenus des m\u00e9nages, car elle contribuera \u00e0 pr\u00e9server la production de pommes de terre, la deuxi\u00e8me culture de base la plus importante d\u2019Afrique de l\u2019Est. Elle contribue \u00e9galement \u00e0 la vision d\u2019une \u00e9conomie circulaire en transformant la fibre de banane, souvent consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme un d\u00e9chet agricole et une nuisance pour les agriculteurs, en mati\u00e8re premi\u00e8re pour une innovation en mati\u00e8re de lutte contre les ravageurs. Cela pourrait cr\u00e9er des opportunit\u00e9s pour les entrepreneurs et les agriculteurs. Outre la r\u00e9duction de la surutilisation ou de l\u2019utilisation abusive des pesticides chimiques, la technologie \u2018 wrap and plant \u2019 favorisera \u00e9galement la protection de l\u2019environnement en contribuant \u00e0 freiner la tendance croissante qui pousse les agriculteurs \u00e0 d\u00e9fricher les for\u00eats de mani\u00e8re non durable afin de cr\u00e9er des champs productifs exempts de n\u00e9matodes du pommier et d\u2019autres ravageurs.
