Mangroves, marshes, peatlands, rice fields, coral reefs, lakes, lagoons, deltas, floodplains, and rivers make up the earth’s wetlands. They remain among the most biologically diverse portions of the ecosystems, supporting a wide range of plant and animal species in a combination of land and water space, which usually characterizes wetlands. The world’s most expansive wetlands include the Amazon River basin, the Pantanal in South America, and the West Siberian Plain.

Drone view of the biodiversity-rich wetlands around the IITA Ibadan campus.

Over the last 100 years, 50% of the world’s wetlands have disappeared due to increased housing needs from the rise of urbanization, water pollution, species invasion, water filling, and overfishing. UN reports that we are losing wetlands three times faster than we are losing forests. Ironically, wetlands store more carbon than forests. Peatlands store about 30% of all land-based carbon. Mangroves store carbon about 55 times faster than tropical rainforests.

Wetlands provide ecosystem services that support the existence and sustenance of people and lifeforms on planet earth. These ecosystem services include water purification, water storage, flood control, carbon decomposition, carbon sequestration and storage, storm protection, and climate regulation. Wetlands support the livelihood of about 60% of humans who live and work in coastal areas. Wetland paddies provide rice for about 3.5 billion people, and over a billion people make their living from fishing, aquaculture, and tourism.

A wetland serving the Olokemeji community in southwestern Nigeria.

Wetlands can be harnessed to combat climate change and are great filters. Similar to the kidney function of the human body, wetlands eject wastes from water bodies to keep them pure. On the other hand, forests mop up excess carbon toxic to the environment and the human body. Hence, environmentalists have described wetlands as the kidneys of the earth and forests as the planet’s lungs. The active combination of wetland- and forest-restoration actions is a promising route to reaching the UN commitment to global net-zero carbon dioxide emission by 2050.

IITA Centre Forestier restores degraded forests and invariably restores the wetlands around the Olokemeji area of Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, through funding from Nigerian Breweries, TerraMatch, and One Tree Planted. This year, IITA Forest Center joins the UN Convention to implore everyone to actively commit to restoring the world’s wetlands. We must make choices that support the protection of our wetlands for the good of our people and planet. At the most basic level:

Avoid wasting water

Avoid running chemicals and toxic substances into wetlands

Avoid dumping solid wastes and household trash into wetlands

Adopt an eco-friendly diet

On a broader level, join communities and contribute to initiatives that protect the environment. Be the voice for wetlands restoration among your friends and through your social media platforms.

Proposé par Folake Oduntan

Wetlands make up about 6% of the earth’s surface but accommodate about 40% of all species of plants and animals.

[32

61
[201
post-14557","news-item","type-news-item","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","location-nigeria","hub-western-africa","item-year-201
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
