With millions of tons produced annually worldwide, Africa is fast becoming one of the major producers of the crop through breeding programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_26141\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26141\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26141 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITA-Product-Manager-for-Grain-Crops-Dean-Muungani-anchoring-the-meeting.jpg\" alt=\"IITA Product Manager for Grain Crops, Dean Muungani, anchoring the meeting.\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26141\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IITA Product Manager for Grain Crops, Dean Muungani, anchoring the meeting.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, to respond to market trends and needs for grain crops\u2014one of CGIAR\u2019s reforms, a soybean product advancement meeting was held on 2 May at the IITA Ibadan campus. The discussion focused on advancing promising IITA-bred soybean varieties for the West African region through a data-driven approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IITA partners from Syngenta Foundation, Seed Companies, National Research Agricultural System partners (NARS), and the Soybean Association of Nigeria participated at the meeting alongside other key players from IITA stations and hubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_26142\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26142\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26142 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITA-Soybean-Breeder-Abebe-Abush-presenting-on-Product-Advancement.jpg\" alt=\" IITA Soybean Breeder Abebe Abush presenting on Product Advancement.\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IITA Soybean Breeder Abebe Abush presenting on Product Advancement.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting, anchored by IITA Product Manager for Grain Crops Dean Muungani, allowed the team to deliberate on 12 soybean varieties, checking which varieties should be advanced in line with market trends and requirements, and discuss the key traits that breeders would focus on in subsequent breeding programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Dean, there are metrics, including market segments designed under the product design and trade specification, that breeders focus on to assist the team in deciding the varieties to be advanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_26143\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26143\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26143 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Participants-deliberating-on-feedback-on-traits-desired-by-the-market.jpg\" alt=\" Participants deliberating on feedback on traits desired by the market.\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Participants deliberating on feedback on traits desired by the market.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also stated that the exercise is powered by Seed Equal, a CGIAR initiative to ensure all breeding programs undergo a similar process.
