The International Millet Conference took place on 18-19 March at the Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. The conference was themed \u201cEnhancing Productivity and Value Addition in Millets\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_26285\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26285\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26285 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Indian-Prime-Minister-Narendra-Modi.jpg\" alt=\"Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi (third from left) inaugurating the Global Millets (Shree Anna) Conference.\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26285\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi (third from left) inaugurating the Global Millets (Shree Anna) Conference.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the conference, explaining that cultivating millet in larger quantities can contribute to food security and help provide more nourishment to people of all ages. That\u2019s why India and its partners, including Nigeria, are educating the world about the wonders of the crop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other dignitaries at the conference included Indian Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Surinamese Minister of Agriculture, Parmanand Prahlad Sewdien, Guyanese Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustafa, Agriculture Minister of Zambia, Reuben Mtolo Phiri. All the participants agreed that when countries gather at agricultural conferences, technologies needed for planting crops such as millet can be exchanged and higher yields achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_26286\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26286\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26286 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IAA-Chief-of-Party-Prakash-Kant-Silwal.jpg\" alt=\"IAA Chief of Party Prakash Kant Silwal (second from right, in black suit) discussing plant health, aflatoxin, and Aflasafe with officials from India and Suriname.\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IAA Chief of Party Prakash Kant Silwal (second from right, in black suit) discussing plant health, aflatoxin, and Aflasafe with officials from India and Suriname.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the presentations, the IAA Chief of Party, Prakash Kant Silwal, highlighted IITA\u2019s role in millet nutrition, value addition, and interfacing with different consumers to leverage market opportunities. He also spoke about the market approach to improving the livelihood of smallholder farmers in northeast Nigeria through technology (Aflasafe) and community nutrition. Silwal explained how IITA has delivered more than 70% of the CGIAR\u2019s impact in sub-Saharan Africa through a science-driven improvement of agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He emphasized the uniqueness of USAID\u2019s support in ensuring that northeast Nigeria has viable food value chains. Silwal also spotlighted some critical technologies, such as Aflasafe, and tools employed in producing highly nutritive crops like millet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silwal attended the conference with members of the Nigeria Millet Initiative and Niger State Ministries of Agriculture and Investment. The conference created global networking opportunities and prospective partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Contributed by Joke
