{"id":15060,"date":"2026-06-20T12:40:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/news-item\/banana-project-applauded-for-making-record-progress-amidst-the-covid-19-pandemic\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T21:10:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T21:10:11","slug":"banana-project-applauded-for-making-record-progress-amidst-the-covid-19-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"news-item","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/banana-project-applauded-for-making-record-progress-amidst-the-covid-19-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Banana project applauded for making record progress amidst the COVID-19 pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\">IITA<\/a>\u00a0management and the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breedingbetterbananas.org\/\">Accelerated Breeding Better Bananas (ABBB)<\/a>\u00a0project\u2014the biggest banana breeding project\u2014have praised the project for its solid achievements in improving the production and productivity of banana in Tanzania and Uganda, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19.\n\nNotable achievements include the official release of new banana hybrids of the popular cooking banana \u2018matooke\u2019 in Tanzania\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/banana-hybrids-can-more-than-double-the-yield-of-best-parents\/\">the first-ever hybrids locally bred<\/a>, and the rolling out of the innovative\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/banana-breeding-project-successfully-implements-modern-track-and-trace-system\/\">Banana breeding Tracking Tool (BTracT)<\/a>\u00a0currently operational across all project breeding sites.\n<div id=\"attachment_8002\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Banana1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8002\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Banana1.jpg\" alt=\"Banana project applauded for making record progress amidst the COVID-19 pandemic\" width=\"551\" height=\"409\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8002\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-8002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An overview of the research themes and partners under the ABBB project.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nThe team reported their achievements during the project\u2019s annual review and planning meeting held virtually on 17-20 May to review progress and results and discuss a way forward as the prject transitions into the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/excellenceinbreeding.org\/\">Excellence in Breeding<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0(EiB) platform under One CGIAR in 2022.\n\nIn her opening remarks,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/tripathi-leena\/\">Leena Tripathi<\/a>, IITA Director for Eastern Africa Hub, appreciated the hard work and commended the project on its achievements. These included good collaboration with national partners\u2014the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) and Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), which contributed towards improving banana breeding systems and changing the lives of banana farming communities.\n<div id=\"attachment_8003\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Banana2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8003\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Banana2.jpg\" alt=\"Banana project applauded for making record progress amidst the COVID-19 pandemic\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8003\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-8003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A group photo of the virtual annual meeting of the ABBB project.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\u201cMajor achievements of the project include the official release of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bulletin.iita.org\/index.php\/2020\/09\/04\/tanzania-spotlights-its-first-ever-matooke-hybrids-at-the-2020-national-farmers-exhibition-nane-nane\/\">Narita<\/a>\u00a0hybrids in Tanzania; development and deployment of the banana tracking tool, which is key for modern banana breeding programs, and efforts in training the next generation of banana breeders, including IITA and partner staff in Uganda and Tanzania as well as several PhD and masters\u2019 students,\u201d she said.\n\nThe project team and partners highlighted the results and challenges under the project\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breedingbetterbananas.org\/index.php\/research-theme-leaders\/\">th\u00e8mes de recherche<\/a>\u00a0and future outlook. The themes are pre-breeding, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breedingbetterbananas.org\/index.php\/2021\/03\/18\/food-for-thought-genetic-gains-in-banana-and-plantain-breeding-in-africa\/\">breeding<\/a>\u00a0(divided into two subthemes: Matooke and Mchare), data management, communication and capacity building, and seed delivery\/variety release systems.\n\nHighlighting the project\u2019s successes,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/swennen-rony\/\">Prof Rony Swennen<\/a>, the project coordinator, noted that the project\u2019s breeding was currently guided by the product profile for the parents and the final product to ensure it met the consumers\u2019 demands.\n\n\u201cWe developed the product profiles together with our colleagues at NARO; however, we still need to work on it further because what we have now was only done by breeders. We need to have the consumers and market intelligence to refine the elements,\u201d Swennen said.\n\nHe further noted that the team is linking hybrids with sensory acceptability, an important element to start evaluating for quality. The bases are developed by NARO using the preferred traits with measurements in the laboratory. Furthermore, the first Mchare hybrids have been selected for preliminary yield trials.\n\nGiving their feedback on progress and achievement,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jahnresearchgroup.cals.wisc.edu\/who-we-are\/eva-weltzien-rattunde\/\">Eva Weltzien-Rattunde<\/a>, SAG member, also commended the good and clear division of roles and responsibilities between the national research institutes and IITA.\n\n\u201cThere is good integration of pathology work during pre-breeding and breeding work,\u201d Weltzein-Rattunde said.\n\nThe ABBB project seeks to strengthen the banana breeding programs in the two countries towards developing new high-yielding hybrid banana varieties with resistance to key pests and diseases.\n\nThe project is led by IITA in cooperation with TARI and NARO and brings together other institutes and banana breeding programs across the globe.
