The study, published in May in the\u00a0<em>Plant Biotechnology Journal<\/em>, was conducted at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/about-iita\/research-hubs-and-stations\/eastern-africa\/\">IITA-Nairobi<\/a>\u00a0between 2019 and 2020.\n\n\u2018\u2018It is urgent to close the yield gap in staple crops and enhance food production to feed the world. The application of genome editing can improve agricultural productivity, thus boosting food security,\u2019\u2019 says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/tripathi-leena\/\">Leena Tripathi<\/a>, the lead author.\n\nThe researchers used CRISPR\/Cas9 based genome editing to knock down the\u00a0<em>DMR6 Orthologue<\/em>\u00a0in banana for developing resistance to Banana Xanthomonas Wilt (BXW) disease.\n<div id=\"attachment_7955\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/New-study-p1.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7955\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/New-study-p1.png\" alt=\"Banana bacterial wilt leads to premature ripening of the banana fruit.\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7955\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7955\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Banana bacterial wilt leads to premature ripening of the banana fruit.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nThey discovered that targeted mutations in the\u00a0<em>DMR6\u00a0<\/em>gene sequence confer enhanced resistance to bacterial disease and that knocking out one\u00a0<em>DMR6\u00a0<\/em>gene has no detrimental impact on plant growth.\n\nThe study found that there are multiple\u00a0<em>DMR6\u00a0<\/em>gene sequences in banana. \u2018\u2018The differential expression through\u00a0<em>qRT-PCR<\/em>\u00a0confirmed that expression of the\u00a0<em>Musa DMR6<\/em>\u00a0gene is activated during pathogen-infection in the susceptible banana cultivar,\u2019\u2019 Tripathi notes.\n\nThe availability of banana reference genome sequences and the CRISPR\/Cas9-editing system developed at IITA motivated Tripathi and her team to develop disease-resistant banana by precisely editing the endogenous genes.\n\n\u2018\u2018After establishing a genome-editing tool for banana in our laboratory, we started focusing on disease resistance, particularly BXW disease, which is one of the most devastating diseases affecting banana production in East and Central Africa,\u201d she continues.\n\n\u201cAll the cultivated banana varieties are susceptible to BXW disease. Overall economic losses from BXW were estimated at US$2-8 billion over a decade,\u2019\u2019 Tripathi explains.\n\nFood security experts say the emphasis in Africa, unlike other parts of the world, should be on banana rather than cereals since it is one of the main crops used for staple food and in income generation.\n\nInvestment in the genetic improvement of banana holds excellent prospects for improving food security as these crops feed more people per unit area of production than other staple crops.\n\nGenome editing offers cost-effective strategies for developing improved varieties of banana resistant to multiple diseases. \u2018\u2018Genome editing technology can help banana farmers in Africa beat economic\u00a0losses from BXW,\u2019\u2019 states the study.\n<div id=\"attachment_7956\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/New-study-p2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7956\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/New-study-p2.png\" alt=\"Healthy bananas, not infected with BXW.\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7956\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Healthy bananas, not infected with BXW.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nThis study demonstrates the application of CRISPR\/Cas9 for crop improvement with an important trait\u2014disease resistance.
