Dried small fish has been found to significantly enhance nutrient deficiencies in the diets of pregnant or lactating women and young children.\n\nA recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/mcn.13192\">\u00e9tudier<\/a>\u00a0carried out by a group of researchers, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\">IITA<\/a>\u2019s Senior Scientist and gender focal point,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/steven-cole\/\">Steven Cole<\/a>, assessed the nutrient content of two locally developed fish\u2010based recipes, fish powder and fish chutney, and calculated the contribution of calcium, zinc, iron, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to the diets of pregnant and lactating women and children between 6 and 24\u2009months.\n<div id=\"attachment_7915\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Addressing-nutrition1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7915 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Addressing-nutrition1.jpg\" alt=\"Addressing nutritional deficiencies using dried small fish\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7915\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fish chutney with nsima (thick maize porridge), vegetables, and beans.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nThe study found that processing small fish into powder achieved the optimum nutrient density of iron, zinc, and calcium for the diets of children between 6 and 11\u2009months old, a stage when adequate nutrient intake is highly critical. Fish powder is primarily essential fatty acids; one serving contains 50 mg of omega\u20106 fatty acids and 121\u2009mg of omega\u20103 fatty acids.\n\nThe diet of infants and young children can be improved by adding small amounts of fish powder, which provides additional iron, zinc, calcium, and DHA to a meal. A single 10 g serving of fish powder provides 12% of the iron recommendation for infants 6\u201311\u2009months and 19% for children 12\u201324\u2009months.\n\nFurthermore, micronutrient deficiencies (also known as \u2018hidden hunger\u2019) can be combatted by consuming small dried fish as part of a daily meal in the first critical 1000 days of life.\n<div id=\"attachment_7913\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Addressing2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7913 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Addressing2.jpg\" alt=\"Addressing nutritional deficiencies using dried small fish\" width=\"413\" height=\"411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7913\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7913\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fish powder provides additional iron, zinc,\ncalcium, and DHA for infants and young children.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nThe study also showed that the diets of pregnant and lactating women could be improved by the addition of fish chutney, which provides calcium and some iron and zinc. The fish chutney contains 1.9 mg of iron, 2.2 mg of zinc, and 510 mg of calcium per 30 g serving. Fish chutney also boosts women\u2019s calcium intake and provides almost 2 g of fat.
