Maize is usually consumed green but can also be eaten as\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">masa<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">maize dough from ground\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">corn<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">soak<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00e9d.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and cook<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00e9d.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in an alkaline solution to remove aflatoxin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which Latin Americans consume.\u202fThe crop is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">also used as the main ingredient to produce corn ethanol, animal feed, and other by-products, such as corn starch and corn syrup.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Variations in maize yield may be due to several biotic and abiotic factors, including<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but not limited to, pests and diseases, nutrient deficiencies, and climate change. Furthermore, the period of farmland cultivation, the number and species of livestock held, and soil fertility level are major predictors of on-farm production involving maize.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_27483\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27483\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27483\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Food-security-p1-300x150-1.jpg\" alt=\"Maize is both a food and industrial crop with many uses.\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27483\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><br \/>Maize is both a food and industrial crop with many uses.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In line with the above, researchers carried out a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s12571-020-01059-2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00e9tudier<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to determine maize yield gaps across Rwanda in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bugesera<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0et\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rubavu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0districts, representing two contrasting agroecological zones. The study also aimed to devise appropriate strategies for managing maize yield gaps to ensure food security in Rwanda.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the researchers,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/nabahungu-leon\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nabahungu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0N. Leon<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">IITA<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0System Agronomist, pointed out that an increase in agricultural productivity in smallholder farms is greatly subject to the efficient use of available inputs. Likewise, providing plants with sufficient nutrients is critical, as their availability may heavily impact crop productivity. It was evident that applying adequate and correct amounts of soil nutrients, coupled with sound management strategies, will translate into increased food production for sustainable improvements in food security and additional income among farmers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Therefore, sustaining food production should target farm-level issues and address all the limiting factors giving rise to low productivity.
