The plant breeding and genetics researcher went to Cornell from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\">IITA<\/a>, Ibadan, where he worked with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/kulakow-peter\/\">Peter Kulakow<\/a>, head of Cassava Breeding.\n\nBakare is researching to determine if cassava breeding programs targeted at specific agroecological zones would yield improved results instead of breeding varieties designed to adapt to Nigeria\u2019s broad ecological zone.\n<div id=\"attachment_7736\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/NextGencass1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7736\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/NextGencass1.jpg\" alt=\"NEXTGEN Cassava breeder receives Cornell Africa Fund Fellowship\" width=\"616\" height=\"492\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7736\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cornell Africa Fund Fellowship awardee, Moshood Agba Bakare.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nNextGen Cassava, funded by the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth &amp; Development Office, aims to produce model cassava breeding programs, improve and expand the breeding programs\u2019 population to ensure a solid foundation for future genetic gains, release improved cassava varieties that meet the criteria for quality acceptability, and sustainably improve smallholder farmer livelihoods, among others.\n\nBakare\u2019s course adviser, Jean-Luc Jannink of the US Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS), said Moshood has diligently expanded his skills since he came to Cornell. This award will not only support me in my research fieldwork but also motivate me to apply various skills and knowledge acquired in the course of my studying towards optimization of available resources in the cassava breeding program in Nigeria. I am deeply appreciative of Cornell University for considering me worthy of this award.\u201d\n\nThe Fellowship Fund covers his full tuition and nine months\u2019 stipend and benefits at
