The huge youthful population in Nigeria faces high rates of unemployment, underemployment, and poor livelihood.\n\nA recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/care.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/UMAR-POLICY-B.pdf\">\u00e9tudier<\/a>\u00a0par\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\">IITA<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/care.iita.org\/\">SOIN<\/a>\u00a0youth researcher\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/care.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/UMAR-POLICY-B.pdf\">Sulaiman Umar<\/a>\u00a0reveals that agriculture can be a sustainable source of employment and livelihood for many youth. Employing more youth as modern agripreneurs would increase domestic food security while developing a rural economy and engendering economic growth. The study also found that undergraduate students are willing to engage in agribusiness, especially when given an enabling environment.\n<div id=\"attachment_7578\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/enhancing1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7578\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/enhancing1.jpg\" alt=\"Enhancing youth\u2019s willingness to engage in agripreneurship\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7578\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Undergraduates are willing to engage in agribusiness when given an enabling environment.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nThe research carried out in north-western Nigeria assessed the factors that influence youth engaging in agribusiness in contrast to their south-western counterparts. According to Umar, north-west youth are willing to engage in agribusiness if conditions are enabling, while those in the south-west will opt for other occupations rather than agriculture.\n\nYouth in Nigeria form a significant part of the population, with potentials that can be strategically harnessed to provide sustainable solutions to unemployment. Agribusiness has been listed as one of the major solutions to creating employment for young people, and this study reveals some of the factors that motivate them to become agripreneurs.\n\nAccording to the study, which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifad.org\/en\/\">FIDA<\/a>\u00a0is sponsoring, young people with positive attitudes and confidence in their agribusiness skills are significantly more likely to become agripreneurs. \u201cIdeally, youth trained in faculties and schools of agriculture in universities and polytechnics acquire such competencies,\u201d Umar stated.\n<div id=\"attachment_7579\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/enhancingyouth2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7579\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/enhancingyouth2.jpg\" alt=\"Enhancing youth\u2019s willingness to engage in agripreneurship\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7579\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Youth in Nigeria face high rates of unemployment and agripreneurship provides a solution to this challenge.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nThe study recommended that policymakers engage civil society organizations and youth groups in enlightenment campaigns geared towards changing mindsets and encouraging youth to embrace agribusiness as a means of livelihood.\n\nIn the study, Umar recommends initiatives that can make soft loans available to young agripreneurs while equipping them with the skills and competencies needed to establish and manage agribusiness enterprises.
