Female<\/span>\u00a0scientists play an essential role at the forefront of CGIAR<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s mission to deliver science and innovation that advance<\/span>\u00a0le<\/span>\u00a0transformation of fo<\/span>od, land, and water systems in a\u00a0<\/span>climate<\/span>\u00a0crisis. Female<\/span>\u00a0sci<\/span>entists, representing 29% of the\u00a0<\/span>CGIAR<\/span><\/a>\u00a0workforce<\/span>, power its<\/span>\u00a0innovation but still require more support to thrive. This\u00a0<\/span>led to<\/span>\u00a0the creat<\/span>ion of<\/span>\u00a0Women in Research and Science (WIRES), a new employee-led resource group (ERG) that aims to build an enabling environment to empower women scientists across CGIAR.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 21 January, the WIRES platform was launched in a virtual seminar themed \u201cPowering One CGIAR<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s innovation through diversity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>The discussion f<\/span>eatur<\/span>\u00e9d.<\/span>\u00a0five expert speakers focused on empowering women in research and science at CGIAR workplaces\u00a0<\/span>worldwide<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

WIRES\u00a0<\/span>is one of three new ERGs established under CGIAR\u2019s gender, diversity<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and inclusion (GDI) Framework.<\/span>\u00a0Le\u00a0<\/span>ERG<\/span>\u00a0was<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>found<\/span>ed by women scientist<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>from\u00a0<\/span>across the CGIAR centers,\u00a0<\/span>y compris\u00a0<\/span>IITA<\/span><\/a>\u00a0scientists\u00a0<\/span>Elizabeth Parkes<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>HarvestPlus<\/span>\u00a0S\u00e9lectionneur de manioc<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0et\u00a0<\/span>Gundula<\/span>\u00a0Fischer<\/span><\/a>, Social Scientist and Gender Expert.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group is dedicated to championing and supporting women<\/span>. The group<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>est\u00a0<\/span>open to any employee\u00a0<\/span>who\u00a0<\/span>is ready to support\u00a0<\/span>un\u00a0<\/span>increase in visibility\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0women research and science professionals by ensuring<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0their voices are heard<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and contributions are recognized. WIRES aims to connect and inspire its members by providing tools and shared knowledge that supports professional development.\u00a0<\/span>This will be<\/span>\u00a0done\u00a0<\/span>par<\/span>\u00a0organizing and sponsoring events and activities that build workplace relationships a<\/span>nd<\/span>\u00a0strengthen<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0networks and alliances across CGIAR.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agathe\u00a0<\/span>Dia<\/span>ma<\/span><\/a>, Head of\u00a0<\/span>Regional\u00a0<\/span>Information and Smart Food Coordinator at ICRISAT, facilitated the session. Excited about the launch and\u00a0<\/span>plans for the network, she<\/span>\u00a0stated that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>men are also encouraged to be part of the group, as it is<\/span>\u00a0not open to<\/span>\u00a0women<\/span>\u00a0alone<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fiona Bourdin, CGIAR Senior Adviser on Gender, Diversity<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and Inclusion, gave an overview of ERG<\/span>s<\/span>. Bourdin stated that their role\u00a0<\/span>is to\u00a0<\/span>promot<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0a diverse and inclusive workplace<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0one of WIRES\u2019<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0goal<\/span>s<\/span>. \u201cERG<\/span>S<\/span>\u00a0encourage great staff engagement, which leads to<\/span>\u00a0improved\u00a0<\/span>motivation, morale<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and innovation in the workplace,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technical Program Manager of the Global Maize Program at CYMMYT and one of the founding members of this ERG<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Aparna Das<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>highlighted\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>he mission and goal of WIRES. Das s<\/span>ai<\/span>d that WIRES promotes\u00a0<\/span>women\u2019s interests and<\/span>\u00a0enhances communication, research collaboration<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and career mentoring among all members. \u201cOur members will be expected to promote inclusiveness in the workplace, motivate colleagues through wider information about women in research and science, contribute to the mission of WIRES, and help people access ideas that inspire change and benefit individuals, families<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and communities<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a panel discussion anchored by\u00a0<\/span>South Africa Country Representative of IWMI and<\/span>\u00a0a WIRES member\u00a0<\/span>Inga Jacobs-Mata<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0she asked<\/span>\u00a0speakers\u00a0<\/span>\u00e0\u00a0<\/span>share their journey\u00a0<\/span>and lessons learned\u00a0<\/span>as women scientists.\u00a0<\/span>Alice\u00a0<\/span>Ruhweza<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Africa Region Director for the\u00a0<\/span>World Wide<\/span>\u00a0Fund for Nature (WWF)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0stated that over the years, she has learn<\/span>\u00e9d.<\/span>\u00a0to put her values first in everything and then explore how to bring those values to the workplace. \u201cBe visible, accept the vulnerability that comes with being visible<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and be optimistic,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/span>Another speaker,\u00a0<\/span>Chin Yee Chan<\/span>, Research Fellow at\u00a0<\/span>WorldFish<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>stated that she learn<\/span>\u00e9d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>never to<\/span>\u00a0give up but to keep learning to extend the research horizon by exploring research options. \u201cThere are always challenges<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0but if we take it step by step and never give up, it will be a rewarding journey,\u201d she added.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The speakers also highlighted the challenges facing women i<\/span>n R4D and\u00a0<\/span>their hope for CGIAR in the future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Claudia\u00a0<\/span>Sadoff<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>onvener, and Managing Director of\u00a0<\/span>Research Delivery and Impact, for the One CGIAR Executive Management Team<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>mentioned her\u00a0<\/span>hope for CGIAR to become a space where women gain recognition,\u00a0<\/span>n<\/span>ot only in research and science but generally. In the same light,\u00a0<\/span>Safaa<\/span>\u00a0Kumari<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Head of Seed Health Lab\/Plant Virol<\/span>ogist at ICARDA,<\/span>\u00a0advised\u00a0<\/span>le\u00a0<\/span>CGIAR leadership to create a comprehensive workplace for women scientists and researchers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concluding the seminar, Das encou<\/span>raged both men and women to be<\/span>\u00a0part of\u00a0<\/span>le\u00a0<\/span>group. \u201cWe welcome and encourage all of you to join WIRES<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0let\u2019s build this team together,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
