The project emphasizes the need to engage in farming and research processes without endangering biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_27613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27613\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27613\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/new-Forest-p1-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"Forest conservation begins with a robust nursery system for new trees.\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Forest conservation begins with a robust nursery system for new trees.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the project manager, Adewale Awoyemi, \u201cUnsustainable farming and expanding urbanization are two major threats confronting biodiversity globally. The prime interests have always been to maintain the integrity of natural areas and restore degraded habitats. In addition, recent advances in conservation biology have also shown that urban areas and farmlands can still support substantial biodiversity if well-planned\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new project focuses on bird monitoring, forest restoration, environmental education, and strengthening outreaches, research collaboration, and students. \u201cWe will promote sustainable farming, investigate the impacts of urbanization on birds, restore degraded areas of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/about-iita\/facilities\/iita-forest-reserve\/\"><u>IITA Forest Reserve<\/u><\/a>\u00a0with native tree species, and raise public awareness about these activities to achieve the objectives of the new project,\u201d Awoyemi added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_27614\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27614\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27614\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/new-Forest-p2-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"Project Manager Adewale Awoyemi studying a bird in the IITA Forest Center.\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27614\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Project Manager Adewale Awoyemi studying a bird in the IITA Forest Center.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr_basIiv7gIVkbrtCh3jBQhDEAAYASAAEgLcY_D_BwE\"><u>Birdlife International<\/u><\/a>\u00a0designates the IITA Forest Reserve (c. 350 ha), Ibadan as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area due to the presence of 67 unique Guineo-Congolian bird species.
