The Ambassador visited the headquarters for the first time to engage with and understand IITA\u2019s research and operations better.\n\nThe Belgian Embassy\u2019s Director, Political and Economic Affairs, Stef Commers, accompanied Ambassador Bertrand. A team of IITA senior management and research staff led by the Deputy Director General, Partnerships for Delivery,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/dashiell-kenton\/\">Kenton Dashiell<\/a>, received the diplomats,\n<div id=\"attachment_7407\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITAs-work-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7407\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITAs-work-1.jpg\" alt=\"IITA\u2019s work, fundamental for Africa\u2019s stability and development\u2013 Belgian Ambassador\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7407\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7407\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Belgian delegation meeting with the IITA team before touring the research facilities.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nIn his welcome address, Dashiell spoke about IITA\u2019s history from its 1967 inception in Nigeria. \u201cWe love working in Nigeria. This is such an important country for Africa and, we believe, for the world.\u201d He said Nigeria\u2019s success in agriculture would help drive the African economy forward, and IITA is proud to be a part of that endeavor.\n\nDashiell thanked the Belgian government and the people of Belgium for their strong support to IITA over the years, including their support for the banana and cassava breeding programs and the Consortium for Improving Agriculture-based Livelihoods in Central Africa (CIALCA). One of IITA\u2019s Belgian scientists and Banana Breeder,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/swennen-rony\/\">Rony Swennen<\/a>, guided the Ambassador through the Institute\u2019s banana research, which takes as much as 20 years to develop high yielding varieties. He highlighted the success of recently approved varieties in Tanzania and the set-up of a tissue culture facility in Mali. The Director of IITA Central Africa Hub,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/vanlauwe-bernard\/\">Bernard Vanlauwe<\/a>, another Belgian national, gave a presentation underscoring the importance of Belgian support in IITA-related programs, including CIALCA.\n<div id=\"attachment_7408\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITAs-work-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7408\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITAs-work-2.jpg\" alt=\"IITA\u2019s work, fundamental for Africa\u2019s stability and development\u2013 Belgian Ambassador\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7408\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7408\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Belgian Ambassador HE Daniel Bertrand (center) and Director, Political and Economic Affairs, Stef Commers (3rd from left), with the IITA team.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nDuring a tour of IITA facilities, the Ambassador made a quick stopover at the Cassava Processing Center. Molecular Geneticist\/Breeder Ismail Rabbi, Assistant Cassava Seed Systems Specialist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/diebiru-ojo-elohor-mercy\/\">Mercy Diebiru-Ojo<\/a>, and International Trials Manager Peter Iluebbey gave presentations showcasing the different processes in the cassava value chain, from breeding to value addition and distribution.\n\nAmbassador Bertrand said that he had a positive first impression of IITA\u2019s work and is pleased with how Belgium is contributing to the effort. During his career in the development sector, he realized \u201cthat food and resources are at the center of conflicts and, you know with demographic growth, food production is vital to stabilize a country, to stabilize a region.\u201d This is why he believes in the importance of the Institute\u2019s work.\n<div id=\"attachment_7409\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITAs-work-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7409\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITAs-work-3.jpg\" alt=\"IITA\u2019s work, fundamental for Africa\u2019s stability and development\u2013 Belgian Ambassador\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7409\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Assistant Cassava Seed Systems Specialist Mercy Diebiru-Ojo giving Ambassador Bertrand a presentation on the cassava value chain.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\u201cFood and Agriculture are vital for the development, and I would say survival of Africa,\u201d said the Ambassador.
