In 2017,\u00a0<\/span>IITA<\/span><\/a>\u00a0celebrated 50 years of service to Africa and its smallholder farmers in particular. Since then, the Institute has advanced even further in its mission to transform African agriculture through collaboration with farmers and farming communities, youth and women in agribusiness, and other partner-stakeholders.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

IITA\u2019s 2019 Annual Report<\/span><\/a>\u00a0detailed this work and highlighted the delivery of research innovations on five impact areas: Nutrition and food security; Poverty reduction, livelihoods, and jobs; Gender equality, youth, and social inclusion; Climate adaptation and greenhouse gas reduction; and Environmental health and biodiversity. IITA continues active participation in\u00a0<\/span>CGIAR<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Research Programs (CRP) and Platforms that align with its strategy to achieve this goal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest challenge in agriculture is to feed the growing human population, which is projected to reach 9.7 billion in 2050 compared to 7.7 billion in 2019.\u00a0<\/span>O<\/span>perat<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0via its regional hubs and research stations across sub-Saharan Africa<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0IITA\u00a0<\/span>is keen<\/span>\u00a0\u00e0\u00a0<\/span>deliver<\/span>\u00a0research innovations\u00a0<\/span>even\u00a0<\/span>more efficient<\/span>ly<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>through its\u00a0<\/span>Partnerships for Delivery<\/span>\u00a0(P4D) efforts<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019, IITA added the Sahelian region of West Africa\u2014one of the\u00a0<\/span>world\u2019s most vulnerable regions<\/span>\u2014as a priority impact zone<\/span>. T<\/span>he agriculture sector\u00a0<\/span>here\u00a0<\/span>is under strain due to many risks that are likely to deteriorate in the face of climate change. Hence, IITA and partners are making contributions in the Sahel through collaborative projects to improve livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, increase employment, and ensure natural resource integrity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe believe that a better organized and more focused IITA can provide the food and agricultural research base and service and delivery partnerships necessary to ensure greater impact by complementing the ongoing efforts of African countries and their national undertakings,\u201d said IITA Director General\u00a0<\/span>Nteranya Sanginga<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As former president of Nigeria, and IITA Ambassador, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo\u00a0<\/span>noted\u00a0<\/span>at the 50<\/span>th<\/span>-anniversary celebrations,\u00a0<\/span>innovation is incomplete until the\u00a0<\/span>research products<\/span>\u00a0have gotten into the\u00a0<\/span>farmer\u2019s hands<\/span>. \u201cWe must get whatever you produce out there to the farmers. And whatever it takes us to get your products to the farmers, I believe it\u2019s worth it,\u201d he said. He added that \u201cgetting the products to the farmers is almost as important as getting the products ready because the product that is not in the hands of the farmers is a wasted product.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
