{"id":15267,"date":"2026-06-20T12:41:41","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/news-item\/new-publication-tackles-the-major-challenges-facing-banana-production\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T12:41:41","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:41:41","slug":"new-publication-tackles-the-major-challenges-facing-banana-production","status":"publish","type":"news-item","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/new-publication-tackles-the-major-challenges-facing-banana-production\/","title":{"rendered":"New publication tackles the major challenges facing banana production"},"content":{"rendered":"The One Health approach, which looks at the interconnectedness between human, animal, and environmental health, should also emphasize plant health, says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\">IITA<\/a>\u2019s plant health pathologist for the Eastern Africa hub,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/mahuku-george\/\">George Mahuku<\/a>.\n\nSpeaking at a seminar at IITA-Tanzania on 3 November, Mahuku said, \u201cThere is an urgent need to recognize the interconnection between plant health and the other major concepts under the One Health concept.\u201d\n\nMahuku noted that 40% of global food crops are lost to plant pests and diseases; this amounts to trade losses of US$220 billion in agricultural products annually. Climate change also impacts plant health leading to a reduction in the quality and quantity of crops.\n<h2>Food safety and One Health<\/h2>\nDuring the seminar, Mahuku used aflatoxin contamination to illustrate the importance of including plant health under One Health.\n\nAflatoxin is caused by\u00a0<em>Aspergillus flavus,<\/em>\u00a0a fungus that lives in the soil and attacks crops while in the field and in storage.
