The group came on a<\/span>\u00a0tour<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of IITA\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>facilit<\/span>ies<\/span>\u00a0and the mobile cassava processing plant. The visit also aimed to explore possible partnerships with IITA in accessing agricultural technologies for improved agribusiness.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n

The mobile cassava processing plant.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nThe\u202fmobile cassava processing plant was fabricated by IITA in collaboration with th<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(FIIRO) to improve agribusinesses by assisting processors in the rural areas to conveniently gain access to improved processing methods and equipment at a reduced cost.\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>he issue of postharvest losses experienced by rural farmers<\/span>\u00a0is a serious challenge. One of\u00a0<\/span>the problem<\/span>s is<\/span>\u00a0transporting cassava roots from the farm to the factory \u201cas 80% of the cassava root is purely water,\u201d said<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Peter Kolawole<\/span><\/a>, Postharvest Specialist at IITA.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\nT<\/span>he mobile processing plant will enable farmers to process their cassava roots right inside the field. This will save\u00a0<\/span>le\u00a0<\/span>cost of transporting the roots to the factory,\u00a0<\/span>allow farmers\u00a0<\/span>to make use of all the by-products<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and increase<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>production of the end-products<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0which will result in increased profit for farmers and processors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n

TAAT team taking the farmers group on a tour of IITA facilities.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nBusiness for the Ogun State farmers\u2019 group has been challenging because of the high cost of transporting cassava from the farm to factories, as attested to by the President, Sir\u00a0Jare\u00a0Oyesola, during an interview with the IITA Communication team.\u00a0Oyesola\u00a0mentioned how business has been discouraging<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0so much\u00a0<\/span>so\u00a0<\/span>that the organi<\/span>z<\/span>ation began to think of it as a failure.\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>As a business management organi<\/span>z<\/span>ation, we came up with ways to improve the efficiency of the business, while searching for solutions, and the IITA mobile processing plant was recommended,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\nImpressed by the Institute\u2019s facilities, the farmers<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0group is looking at partnering with IITA in getting the mobile processing equipment for the\u00a0<\/span>six<\/span>\u00a0Local Government Areas of Ogun State,\u00a0<\/span>starting<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>getting one cassava processor and starch producer from IITA to boost the\u00a0<\/span>group\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>coo<\/span>perative business.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\nThe Matron, Chief\u00a0Mrs\u00a0Alaba Lawson and\u00a0Mauruff\u00a0Popoola, Youth Entrepreneurship Coordinator of the group<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0also talked about plans to get Ogun State youth trained on machine fabrication and agribusiness in IITA, for financial independence and improved livelihood. \u201cAny youth that is interested in agriculture can find expertise and capacity building in IITA,\u201d Popoola said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
