{"id":15440,"date":"2026-06-20T12:43:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:43:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/news-item\/paper-on-using-genome-editing-tools-to-develop-climate-smart-banana-varieties-among-the-top-most-downloaded\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T20:34:04","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T20:34:04","slug":"paper-on-using-genome-editing-tools-to-develop-climate-smart-banana-varieties-among-the-top-most-downloaded","status":"publish","type":"news-item","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/paper-on-using-genome-editing-tools-to-develop-climate-smart-banana-varieties-among-the-top-most-downloaded\/","title":{"rendered":"Paper on using genome-editing tools to develop climate-smart banana varieties among the top-most downloaded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While banana is an important staple crop feeding more than 500 million people in the tropical and subtropical countries, its production is negatively affected by a myriad of factors including diseases and pests, declining soil fertility, and climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_27985\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27985\" style=\"width: 1486px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27985\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Paper-on-genome-editing-tools-p02-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"IITA\u2019s Principal Scientist in Plant Biotechnology, Leena Tripathi\" width=\"1486\" height=\"743\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27985\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IITA\u2019s Principal Scientist in Plant Biotechnology, Leena Tripathi<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Efforts to develop improved disease resistant and drought tolerant banana varieties are, however, slowed down by the low genetic variability, lengthy production cycle, and sterility of a majority of the cultivars commonly grown by farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, banana scientists are exploring how to use modern breeding tools to complement conventional breeding to enhance the ability of banana to adapt to climate change by resisting both biotic and abiotic stresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A team from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\"><u>CGIAR-IITA<\/u><\/a>\u00a0reviewed the recent developments and the prospects for application of genetic modification and genome editing for developing climate-smart banana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They summarized their findings in the paper,\u00a0<em>Application of genetic modification and genome editing for developing climate-smart banana\u00a0<\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/fes3.168\"><u>https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/fes3.168<\/u><\/a>), published in the March 2019 edition of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/20483694\"><u>Food and Energy Security<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and which has been among the most downloaded papers in the journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IITA\u2019s Principal Scientist in Plant Biotechnology,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/tripathi-leena\/\"><u>Leena Tripathi<\/u><\/a>, led the research team. Others involved in the study were Valentine Otang Ntui, IITA\u2019s Plant Biotechnologist, and Jaindra Nath Tripathi, IITA\u2019s Banana Transformation Specialist. The team has received a certificate of achievement from the publishers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tripathi says the team was delighted with the performance of the paper as reported by the publisher. In a congratulatory note, the publisher stated: \u201cAmong work published between January 2018 and December 2019, yours received some of the most downloads in the 12 months following online publication. Your research generated immediate impact and helped to raise the visibility of\u00a0<em>Food and Energy Security.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tripathi added that the popularity of the paper demonstrated the urgency to increase the productivity of important staple crops to feed the rapidly growing population amid the challenges posed by climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCRISPR\/Cas9-based genome editing has been recently established for banana, paving the way for the development of improved varieties resistant to diseases and pests, particularly when no host plant resistance is available among banana germplasm,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IITA team has spearheaded the use of genome editing for developing banana varieties that are resistant to various deadly diseases.
