Following the signing of a 5-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) geared towards changing the game for food systems in West Africa and the Sahel between IITA<\/a> et Office Cherifien des Phosphates<\/a> (OCP), a partners’ commencement meeting for the regional hub for fertilizer and soil health was held in Marrakech recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hub proposal in collaboration with partners comprising CEDEAO<\/a>, IITA, OCP Africa, the African Plant Nutrition Institute<\/a> (APNI), University Mohammed VI Polytechnic<\/a> (UM6P), International Fertilizer Development Center<\/a> (IFDC), and the Banque mondiale<\/a> is a shared vision of enabling long-term soil health and fertility for enhanced yield, profitability, climate resilience, and a thriving, sustainable agricultural sector for countries in West Africa and the Sahel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the West African region and the Sahel struggling with challenges such as soil health decline, land degradation, poor yields, and loss of ecosystem services\u2014all leading to poverty and depletion of natural resources, the hub will bridge the existing gaps in soil systems, knowledge management, and agronomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hub is designed to strengthen capacity, support policy, and enhance awareness, and will be a fertile ground for groundbreaking innovations and transformative approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the commencement meeting, IITA Director General and CGIAR Regional Director for Continental Africa, Dr Sim\u00e9on Ehui<\/a>, said agricultural systems’ dependence on soil health and fertilizer use transcends national boundaries and collaborative efforts, especially in areas like knowledge sharing and resource mobilization that can result in better achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, establishing the hub will contribute to the mobilization of resources and strengthen the capacities of national institutions responsible for soil fertility and soil health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the shared platform for collaboration, the future of Africa’s food system is set for sustainable transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
