It brought together professionals from academia, industry, government, and research institutions to deliberate and share experiences. The theme of the 2018 Conference was \u201cInnovations in food science and technology for economic growth.\u201d\n<div class=\"articleimg\">\n<div id=\"attachment_4108\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 867px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bulletin.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/L-R-Dr-Busie-Maziya-Dixon-Prof-I.A.-Adeyemi-and-Dr-Olutayo-Adeyemi.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4108\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/L-R-Dr-Busie-Maziya-Dixon-Prof-I.A.-Adeyemi-and-Dr-Olutayo-Adeyemi-300x153-1.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of Dr Busie Maziya-Dixon, Prof I.A. Adeyemi, and Dr Olutayo Adeyemi.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nAs one of the key sponsors of the event,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IITA<\/a>\u00a0hosted a mini symposium on Food Systems for Healthier Diet (FSHD), an ongoing flagship project under the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/a4nh.cgiar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Programme de recherche du CGIAR sur l'agriculture pour la nutrition et la sant\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0(A4NH), during which researchers shared key findings as well as current milestones of the research program in Nigeria. The Session was convened by IITA Senior Food and Nutrition Scientist and A4NH Nigeria Country Team Leader,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/maziya-dixon-busie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Bussie Maziya-Dixon<\/a>\u00a0and chaired by the Vice Chancellor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellsuniversity.edu.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universit\u00e9 de technologie de Bells<\/a>, Ota Abeokuta, Professor Isaac A. Adeyemi. There were three presentations during the Session with the speakers drawn from the Nigeria Country Office of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/home\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Organisation des Nations unies pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture<\/a>\u00a0(FAO), the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unaab.edu.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta<\/a>\u00a0(FUNAAB), and IITA.\n\nIn his opening remarks, Prof Adeyemi noted that the FSHD approach is a required project, especially at a time when the country is confronting serious nutrition challenges. He stated that the session closely fits into the theme of the Conference.\n\nDr Olutayo Adeyemi, presenting on behalf of the FAO Nigeria Country Representative, Mr Suffyan Koroma, pointed out that significant reduction in malnutrition among children and women of reproductive age is among the key agenda in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She also noted that malnutrition has significant financial and economic costs, which invariably hamper the economic growth of a country. Given the daunting statistics on malnutrition, she cautioned that Nigeria may leave more people behind by 2030 if a drastic approach to stem the tide is not given serious consideration.\n\nSpeaking on \u201cFood systems for healthier diet in Nigeria: A research agenda,\u201d IITA Food and Nutrition Research Associate Yusuf Adekunle stated, \u201cthe study is a collaborative as well as multidisciplinary project under CGIAR A4NH geared to responding to concerns about global diet trends, and demand from countries for systemic solutions to address the problems of food insecurity and malnutrition.\u201d He went on to identify several gaps in Food Systems in the country including the need for in-depth empirical work linking market access for farmers to dietary quality, the agricultural production-nutrition linkages, nutritional outcomes of agricultural value chains, and impact evaluation of agricultural policies or program on nutritional outcomes of smallholder farmers with focus on women and children, among others.\n<div class=\"articleimg\">\n<div id=\"attachment_4109\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 870px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bulletin.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/L-R-Dr-Dare-Akerele-Yusuf-Adekunle-with-the-audience-during-the-Session.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4109\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/L-R-Dr-Dare-Akerele-Yusuf-Adekunle-with-the-audience-during-the-Session-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of Dr Dare Akerele, Yusuf Adekunle, with the audience during the Session\" width=\"870\" height=\"496\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4109\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-4109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Dr Dare Akerele, Yusuf Adekunle, with the audience during the Session.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nAn Agricultural Economist from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unaab.edu.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universit\u00e9 f\u00e9d\u00e9rale d'agriculture d'Abeokuta<\/a>\u00a0(FUNAAB), Dr Dare Akerele, gave a presentation titled \u201cDietary gap analysis in Nigeria\u201d on behalf of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wageningen University and Research<\/a>\u00a0(WUR), a leading IITA partner on the FSHD flagship project. He highlighted approaches in assessing dietary gaps in Nigeria with the findings that a significant proportion of households have below recommended calorie consumption and essential nutrient levels.
