The poster was presented by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/kolade-olufisayo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olufisayo Kolade<\/a>, Postdoctoral Fellow and Yam Disease Phenotyping Specialist in the AfricaYam project and in the Virology &amp; Molecular Diagnostics Unit,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IITA<\/a>-Ibadan.\n<div class=\"articleimg\">\n<div id=\"attachment_4098\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 873px\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/The-trophy-for-the-best-poster-of-the-18th-Triennial-Symposium-of-the-International-Society-for-Tuber-and-Root-Crops-ISTRC.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4098\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/The-trophy-for-the-best-poster-of-the-18th-Triennial-Symposium-of-the-International-Society-for-Tuber-and-Root-Crops-ISTRC.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of the trophy for the best poster of the 18th Triennial Symposium of the International Society for Tuber and Root Crops (ISTRC)\" width=\"873\" height=\"1411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4098\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-4098\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The trophy for the best poster of the 18th Triennial Symposium of the International Society for Tuber and Root Crops (ISTRC).<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nThe paper titled \u201cHigh-throughput yam anthracnose phenotyping using detached leaf assay and digital imaging\u201d presented a new phenotyping method established for assessing yam (Dioscorea spp.) germplasm and breeding lines for yam anthracnose disease (YAD) caused by\u00a0<em>Colletotrichum gloeosporioides<\/em>\u00a0resistance. \u201cThis work funded by AfricaYam allows assessment of the performance of yam genotype against YAD under 3 weeks and up to 100 genotypes can be assessed in a week, allowing simultaneous gathering of data on host\u2013pathogen interaction,\u201d said Kolade who led the development of this procedure.\n\nAnother technology was presented by Molecular Geneticist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/bhattacharjee-ranjana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ranjana Bhattacharjee<\/a>, who adopted the Detached Leaf Assay (DLA) for evaluating the breeding populations of\u00a0<em>D. alata<\/em>\u00a0(water yam) as part of the National Science Foundation program, Basic Research to Enable Agricultural Development (NSF-BREAD) funded project. She said that: \u201cThe best aspect of the \u2018DLA-Leaf Doctor\u2019 phenotyping is that a same genotype can be evaluated for multiple traits and it offers precise phenotyping data necessary for genotyping and identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and markers.\u201d\n<div class=\"articleimg\">\n<div id=\"attachment_4095\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n\n<a Doctor\u2019 App.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nIITA Head of Virology and Germplasm Health\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/kumar-lava\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lava Kumar<\/a>\u00a0congratulated Kolade for this success and added that the \u2018DLA-Leaf Doctor\u2019 innovation facilitated the much needed high-throughput phenotyping pipeline necessary to accelerate breeding for YAD resistance in water yam.\n\nAfricaYam Project Leader\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/adebola-patrick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patrick Adebola<\/a>, also cited Kolade for the achievement added that AfricaYam is paving the way for new innovations on biotic stress phenotyping to fast track development of molecular breeding tools and yam breeding in
