{"id":16093,"date":"2026-06-20T12:48:50","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/news-item\/fall-armyworm-forum-advocates-cocktail-of-solutions-before-the-next-outbreak\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T20:00:01","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T20:00:01","slug":"fall-armyworm-forum-advocates-cocktail-of-solutions-before-the-next-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"news-item","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/fall-armyworm-forum-advocates-cocktail-of-solutions-before-the-next-outbreak\/","title":{"rendered":"Fall armyworm: Forum advocates cocktail of solutions before the next outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"Farmers across Africa are reeling under huge losses linked to the devastation by the invasive species called fall armyworm (FAW) or\u00a0<em>Spodoptera frugiperda<\/em>.\n\nWith origins in Eastern and Central North America as well as South America, the caterpillar has since 2016, found its way into 44 African countries, causing significant damage to maize crops with great potential for further spread and economic damage.\n<div id=\"attachment_3981\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/The-experts-and-representatives-of-participating-organizations-pose-for-a-group-photo.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3981\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/The-experts-and-representatives-of-participating-organizations-pose-for-a-group-photo.jpg\" alt=\"The experts and representatives of participating organizations pose for a group photo\" width=\"1024\" height=\"430\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3981\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-3981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The experts and representatives of participating organizations pose for a group photo.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nIn sub-Saharan Africa, fall armyworm has caused heavy losses to staple cereals, especially maize and sorghum, affecting food security and trade, thus upsetting the continent\u2019s plan to feed itself.\n\nThe extent of the destruction on maize alone is estimated to be between US$2.5 and 6.2 billion per year, destabilizing the livelihoods of around 300 million people.\n\nThis and many more reasons spurred experts attending the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agrf.org\/about-agrf-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 African Green Revolution Forum<\/a>\u00a0(AGRF2018) in Kigali, Rwanda, to explore ways of preventing or mitigating the next outbreak in Africa.\n\nSetting the scene at a session on building the resilience of Africa\u2019s agriculture against invasive species,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cabi.org\/about-cabi\/staff\/dennis-rangi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Dennis Rangi<\/a>, Director General of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cabi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International<\/a>\u00a0(CABI) identified continuing globalization through increasing trade, travel, and transport of goods across borders as one of the factors facilitating the spread of invasive species, with an increasing negative impact.\n\nThe problem, according to him, \u201cis global in scope and requires international cooperation to supplement the actions of governments, the private sector, and organizations at national and local levels.\u201d\n\nThe recent arrival of fall armyworm in India is a case in point. The caterpillar\u2019s leap from Africa to India confirms the global nature of invasive species and the need for partnerships to tackle the pest.\n\nAccording to Rangi, \u201ca straightforward, three-pronged, internationally recognized approach to addressing the problem of invasive species, namely prevention, early detection and rapid response, and lastly control will help a great deal.\u201d\n\nHowever, transforming this approach into a reality in policy and practice remains a huge challenge in Africa as African famers usually find themselves trying to address the latest invasion, when the previous invasion is yet to be cleared.\n<div class=\"articleimg\">\n<div id=\"attachment_3982\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bulletin.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Dennis-Rangi-CABI-and-May-Guri-Saethre-IITA-in-a-panel-discussion.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3982\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Dennis-Rangi-CABI-and-May-Guri-Saethre-IITA-in-a-panel-discussion-300x144.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of Dennis Rangi, CABI; and May-Guri Saethre, IITA, in a panel discussion\" width=\"300\" height=\"144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3982\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-3982\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dennis Rangi, CABI; and May-Guri Saethre, IITA, in a panel discussion<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nTo overcome these challenges, the CABI DG urged African countries to create a policy and regulatory environment that promotes sustainable approaches in tackling invasive species; and put in place a national invasive species strategy, an action plan, and a sustainable investment plan.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/saethre-may-guri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr May-Guri Saethre<\/a>, Deputy Director General, Research for Development at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IITA<\/a>, bemoaned the fact that the burden of handling and combating invasive species on a day-to-day manner is to a large extent left to the individual smallholder farmers in Africa.\n\nThe way forward, according to her, lies in \u201cworking together with farmers, government, researchers, and the private sector as current outbreaks are wake- up calls for firm action to protect Africa\u2019s agriculture from the destructive impact of pest outbreaks.\u201d\n\n\u201cTo prevent the next outbreak, technologies capable of stopping pest and disease entry into Africa by pre- emptive biological controls, horizon scanning, and effective early warning systems are available and must be deployed to prevent establishment of new pests through coordinated response and eradication programs,\u201d Saethre added.\n\nChief Scientist at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaid.gov\/who-we-are\/organization\/bureaus\/bureau-food-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USAID Bureau for Food Security<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaid.gov\/who-we-are\/organization\/robert-bertram\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Rob Bertram<\/a>\u00a0sees it differently. To him, fall armyworm is a reminder that we live in a small world that is increasingly becoming smaller and we are more connected than ever.
