{"id":16195,"date":"2026-06-20T12:49:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:49:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/news-item\/n2africa-phase-ii-in-borno-nigeria-organize-annual-meeting\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T19:54:22","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T19:54:22","slug":"n2africa-phase-ii-in-borno-nigeria-organize-annual-meeting","status":"publish","type":"news-item","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/n2africa-phase-ii-in-borno-nigeria-organize-annual-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"N2Africa Phase II in Borno, Nigeria organize annual meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"To ensure effective and continuous use of legume technologies that have been introduced to enhance smallholder farmers\u2019 productivity, partners in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.n2africa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N2Africa<\/a>-Borno phase II project came together in Kano State, Nigeria on 24\u2013 25 May to review progress and develop implementation plans focusing on addressing the gaps identified.\n<div id=\"attachment_3722\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 937px\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Meeting-participants-in-a-discussion.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3722\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Meeting-participants-in-a-discussion.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of meeting participants in a discussion\" width=\"937\" height=\"538\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3722\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-3722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meeting participants in a discussion.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nBeing on the last year of Phase II implementation, the project team and the national partners focused on exit strategies based on the gaps identified that would ensure sustainability of N2Africa legume technologies and its relevance to legume farmers now and in future.\n\nIn his address,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/kamai-nkeki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nkeki Kamai<\/a>, Country Coordinator, N2Africa Borno, recounted the achievements of the project in the areas of building sustainable partnerships and expertise in nitrogen fixation, empowering women and youth, and ensuring food security\u2013the aims of the N2Africa project.\n\n\u201cTo date, we have been able to establish strong and firm partnerships with various NGOs, and public and private sector companies. In improving soil fertility, the adoption of Nodumax by farmers has rapidly increased productivity, and this has invariably improved food security, nutrition, and incomes for smallholder farmers.\u201d\n\n\u201cIn cowpea, we have recorded a 72% adoption rate of improved varieties. We are hopeful that the technologies N2Africa avails to farmers would be increasingly adopted by groundnut farmers as we still have over 16,000 farmers to reach,\u201d Kamai added.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/kanampiu-fred\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fred Kanampiu<\/a>, N2Africa Project Coordinator, emphasized that \u201cEvery year we have been able to meet or exceed our target in terms of farmers reached. Presently, we have reached about 550,000 households in all the 11 countries that N2Africa project targets. We have formed partnerships which continues to address the challenges in the legume value chain and this has helped in reaching targeted farmers. Further, we have institutionalized this project through capacity building of the staff of national partner organizations to make sure that the local experts from the countries are the ones running the show, working with the government. This has helped in the implementation of this project. This approach, we believe will make smooth the exit of the project.\u201d\n\nKanampiu also added: \u201cWe have trained 300 youth \u2018agripreneurs\u2019 in Borno State, of which 200 are now running viable businesses, and that is encouraging.\u201d These youths have been trained to initiate viable businesses along the legume value chain.\n\nDuring the meeting, partners reported on key challenges from the past years and developed workable plans to address during the year.\n\nN2Africa phase II is funded by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fondation Bill &amp; Melinda Gates<\/a>\u00a0through a grant to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wageningen University &amp; Research<\/a>\u00a0and is being carried out in conjunction with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IITA<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilri.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institut international de recherche sur l'\u00e9levage<\/a>\u00a0(ILRI), the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uz.ac.zw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Zimbabwe<\/a>, and many other partners in DR Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To ensure
