The four-day event included activities by IITA staff focused on teambuilding, sharing personal and team strengths and ambitions, and identifying ways to build on these strengths to articulate a clear vision for IITA Rwanda.\n<div id=\"attachment_3642\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 865px\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITA-Country-Representative-Marc-Schut-giving-a-presentation.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3642\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITA-Country-Representative-Marc-Schut-giving-a-presentation.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of IITA Country Representative Marc Schut giving a presentation.\" width=\"865\" height=\"525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3642\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-3642\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IITA Country Representative Marc Schut giving a presentation<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nCountry Representative\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iita.org\/iita-staff\/schut-marcus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marc Schut<\/a>\u00a0led the team in discussing how the Rwanda station should adapt to the changing status of the organization in the country.\n\n[su_quote]\u201cWe are a new team, with new projects and new ambitions,\u201d Schut stated. \u201cThe development of a country strategy will help us to develop synergies between the projects and to focus on the tasks ahead of us.\u201d[\/su_quote]\n\nStaff members gave presentations and workshops on professionalism, improved specialized skills including writing and communication, social media, and general etiquette in conducting relevant work in Rwanda.\n\nThe team developed a new vision statement and mandate in the context of the research activities in the country relative to Rwanda\u2019s agricultural development agenda.\n<ul>\n \t<li>Vision: Contributing to transforming Rwandan agriculture through innovative research and partnerships.<\/li>\n \t<li>Our mandate: To advance science and strengthen capacity in Rwandan banana-, cassava-, soybean- and maize-based systems by collaborating and co-investing with governmental, development, and private sector organizations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nHigh on the agenda for the team was also to deliberate on ways of creating and maintaining strong partnerships with government agencies, local and international organizations, and various foreign government development agencies represented in Rwanda. As part of the efforts, IITA Rwanda invited representatives from main partner organizations including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rab.gov.rw\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rwanda Agricultural Board<\/a>\u00a0(RAB),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ur.ac.rw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Rwanda<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.minagri.gov.rw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ministry of Agriculture<\/a>\u00a0(MINAGRI), ENABEL, Belgian Embassy,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fh.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Food for the Hungry<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caritas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caritas<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oneacrefund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Acre Fund<\/a>, and the Agricultural Chamber of Commerce to join the team on the two final days of the retreat.\n\nThe high-level interaction with representatives from partner organizations provided feedback on IITA\u2019s new mandate and opinions on the organization\u2019s positioning within the research community in Rwanda.\n\nThe Head of the Cassava Program in RAB, Dr Athanase Nduwumuremyi, congratulated IITA on its vision and mandate, which he felt are \u201cfully aligned with the main agricultural strategies and policies in the country.\u201d\n\nThe partners further provided input on their specific interests in main themes that IITA Rwanda is working on including ICT4RAg, Scaling of innovation, Capacity development, Seed systems, and Youth and agribusiness as well as on the main value chains for cassava, banana, soybean, and maize. Dr Charles Murekezi of MINAGRI highlighted potential linkages and entry points for IITA to contribute to projects including aflatoxin mitigation in maize and seed multiplication in soybean.\n\nAccording to Schut, the retreat was significant in helping identify potential areas of collaboration and focus to develop concrete work plans for the next five years of innovative research and partnerships for transforming Rwandan agriculture.\n\nIITA in Rwanda has a decorated history contributing to agricultural research and development work that dates back to the 1980s.
