\nNigeria is undergoing significant transitions, from political changes to demographic, socioeconomic, epidemiological, and nutritional landscape shifts. Adapting policies to these evolving challenges requires establishing a centralized, digitized, interoperable, and accurate ‘single source of truth’ data system.\n\n

<\/figcaption><\/figure>The availability of relevant data and information is crucial for making informed decisions, particularly in public health planning and service delivery for key targets of the Renewed Hope Agenda in Nigeria. With the last National Food Consumption and Micronutrient Survey conducted in 2001, there was a critical need for updated data on the current status and dietary patterns of the Nigerian population.\n\nOn 29 and 30 April, the 2021 National Food Consumption and Micronutrient Survey (NFCMS) report was launched. This report provides updated data crucial for evidence-based decision-making in food, nutrition, and agriculture programming in Nigeria.\n\nThe launch of this report is shifting the nation towards evidence-based policymaking, which is expected to enhance nutritional outcomes. IITA<\/a> Abuja Station Manager Beatrice Aighewi, representing IITA Director General and CGIAR<\/a> Director for Continental Africa, Sim\u00e9on Ehui<\/a>, highlighted IITA’s work with partners across sub-Saharan Africa to improve livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, increase employment, and preserve natural resource integrity.\n\nAighewi stated that the NFCMS is a landmark activity that addresses the burden of malnutrition and its associated health consequences. Its importance lies in ensuring the availability of reliable data for decision making. IITA strongly believes that these data and evidence make Nigeria better placed to improve the nutrition outcomes of its population, especially women and children.\n\nShe mentioned that the quality, volume, and diversity of the data collected in the NFCMS have set Nigeria apart in the African continent and globally. It is expected to catalyze a global conversation about how to invest in agriculture, nutrition, and food systems.\n\n“This ensures a future in which all Nigerian children get good quality food that they need to thrive, not just to survive. With the help of other partners and players in the food, nutrition, and health spaces, we expect this to lead to action that will bring about successful results and impact in the country,” she said.\n\nAighewi congratulated the Government on this historic occasion, emphasizing that closing the data gap can help end malnutrition in Nigeria and Africa.\n\nThe Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, also appreciated senior government officials, his colleagues from the Ministry of Health, development partners, and other stakeholders for their dedication and effort toward this pivotal project.\n<\/p>\n\nContribu\u00e9 par Ochuwa Favour Daramola<\/em>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
