{"id":16678,"date":"2026-06-20T12:52:36","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T12:52:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/news-item\/iita-alumnus-and-afdb-president-bags-prestigious-2017-world-food-prize\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T18:52:36","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T18:52:36","slug":"iita-alumnus-and-afdb-president-bags-prestigious-2017-world-food-prize","status":"publish","type":"news-item","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/iita-alumnus-and-afdb-president-bags-prestigious-2017-world-food-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"IITA alumnus and AfDB President bags prestigious 2017 World Food Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2567\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 333px\">\n\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2567\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/World-Food-Prize-laureate-Akin-Adesina-in-bowtie-with-DG-Nternaya-Sanginga-and-Agripreneurs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"222\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2567\" \/>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">World Food Prize laureate Akin Adesina (in bowtie) with\nDG Nternaya Sanginga and Agripreneurs.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nIITA rejoices with its own champion, alumnus, avid supporter, and mentor of the\u00a0<u>Jeunes agripreneurs de l'IITA<\/u>, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afdb.org\/en\/\"><u>BAD<\/u><\/a>), who was announced the 46<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0laureate of the most coveted food and agriculture award\u2014the World Food Prize.\n\nThe award recognizes his exemplary efforts in driving transformational changes in Nigeria\u2019s agriculture during his time as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, organizing the 2006 Africa Fertilizer Summit as Associate Director for Food Security\u00a0at the Rockefeller Foundation, and for leading a major expansion of commercial bank lending to farmers as Vice President of\u00a0the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (<a href=\"https:\/\/agra.org\/\"><u>AGRA<\/u><\/a>).\n\nEvery year since 1986, the World Food Prize Foundation founded by Nobel Peace Prize recipient Dr\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldfoodprize.org\/en\/dr_norman_e_borlaug\/about_norman_borlaug\/\"><u>Norman Borlaug<\/u><\/a>\u00a0recognizes the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity, or availability of food in the world.\n\nAccording to Ambassador Kenneth Quinn, President of the World Food Prize Foundation who made the announcement on 26 June, Adesina was found most deserving of all the candidates the body considered for 2017 because \u201cthe reforms he implemented increased food production by 21 million metric tons and attracted 5.6 billion dollars in private sector investments. Dr Adesina\u2019s selection further gives impetus to his profound vision for enhancing nutrition, uplifting smallholder farmers, and inspiring the next generation of Africans as they confront the challenges of the 21st century,\u201d Quinn said.\n\nAdesina will\u2014on 19 October\u2014be presented with the award and the accompanying US$250,000 in an elaborate ceremony in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.\n\nIn his congratulatory message, IITA Director General\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/sanginga-nteranya\/\"><u>Nteranya Sanginga<\/u><\/a>\u00a0sums up the feeling of the Institute in these words:\n\n\u201cIt is with great joy and no surprise that we received the news that you had been named the 2017 World Food Prize winner. This is a singular honor to you who have consistently spent your life improving the lives of the millions of Africans in the agricultural communities of sub-Saharan Africa and ensuring the food security of many of our African brothers and sisters, but more so for us in IITA here in Nigeria, where you had spent part of your career, and which you are now supporting through your various development programs as part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afdb.org\/en\/news-and-events\/african-development-bank-accelerates-pace-with-high-5-priorities-15879\/\"><u>High 5 priorities<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of the AfDB.\n\nWe are proud to be associated with you and to work with you and the Bank on our mission to transform agriculture to feed Africa, generate jobs for the teeming millions of Africans, especially the youth, in agribusiness, and lift millions out of poverty.\n\nOne example of the impact of your work is captured in an important paper published recently in a prestigious journal by IITA economists on the impact of policies undertaken when you were the Minister of Agriculture in Nigeria.
