L'\u00e9quipe a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que c'\u00e9tait bien sup\u00e9rieur \u00e0 son objectif pour l'ann\u00e9e 3 et que, si ce rythme \u00e9tait maintenu, le projet surpasserait ses objectifs.\n<div id=\"attachment_2336\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 602px\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1024_DSC_0630.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2336\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1024_DSC_0630.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of Rony Swennen explaining the hybrid breeding process that led to NARITA.\" width=\"602\" height=\"369\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2336\" \/><\/a>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2336\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rony Swennen expliquant le processus d'am\u00e9lioration hybride qui a men\u00e9 au NARITA.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\nLe projet rassemble des experts de programmes d'am\u00e9lioration de la banane du monde entier, notamment d'Australie, de Belgique, du Br\u00e9sil, de R\u00e9publique tch\u00e8que, d'Inde, du Kenya, de Malaisie, d'Afrique du Sud, de Su\u00e8de et des \u00c9tats-Unis, pour travailler avec les \u00e9quipes en Tanzanie et en Ouganda.\n\nIl est dirig\u00e9 par l'IITA et financ\u00e9 par\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fondation Bill &amp; Melinda Gates<\/a>.\n<h3>Des bananes hybrides salu\u00e9es comme un pas dans la bonne direction !<\/h3>\nLa r\u00e9union a \u00e9t\u00e9 officiellement ouverte par Ambrose Agona, directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la NARO, qui a salu\u00e9 le projet comme \u00e9tant bien con\u00e7u dans son approche visant \u00e0 accro\u00eetre la productivit\u00e9 de la banane.\n\n\u201c La plupart des gains r\u00e9alis\u00e9s dans la production agricole dans de nombreux pays d'Afrique l'ont \u00e9t\u00e9 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l'expansion des terres agricoles. Cependant, nous devons intensifier la production pour augmenter les rendements des principales cultures. Par cons\u00e9quent, l'objectif du projet de d\u00e9velopper des hybrides de bananiers \u00e0 haut rendement va dans la bonne direction \u201d, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9.\n\nS'exprimant \u00e9galement lors de la r\u00e9union,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/manyong-victor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victor Manyong<\/a>, directeur de l'IITA pour l'Afrique de l'Est, a soulign\u00e9 que la banane n'\u00e9tait pas seulement une culture vivri\u00e8re majeure pour les petits exploitants, mais aussi un produit de base important. Par cons\u00e9quent, tout effort visant \u00e0 accro\u00eetre la production de cette culture se traduirait \u00e9galement par une am\u00e9lioration de leurs moyens de subsistance.\n<h3>Cr\u00e9er un programme efficace d'am\u00e9lioration des bananes<\/h3>\nL&#x27;objectif du projet est de mettre au point des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s hybrides de bananes pr\u00e9sentant une augmentation de 30% du rendement et de 50% de la r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 au moins trois des principaux ravageurs et maladies, par rapport aux vari\u00e9t\u00e9s actuellement cultiv\u00e9es par les agriculteurs dans les m\u00eames conditions de production.\n\n\u201c Nous soutenons les syst\u00e8mes nationaux de s\u00e9lection afin de les rendre plus efficaces et plus dynamiques. Au bout de cinq ans, nous souhaitons proposer une banane hybride de\u00a0<em>Matooke<\/em>\u00a0et\u00a0<em>Mchare<\/em>\u00a0qui sont non seulement \u00e0 haut rendement et r\u00e9sistantes aux maladies, mais qui r\u00e9pondent \u00e9galement aux besoins et aux pr\u00e9f\u00e9rences de l'utilisateur final \u201d, d\u00e9clare\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/swennen-rony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rony Swennen<\/a>, s\u00e9lectionneur de bananiers \u00e0 l'IITA et chef d'\u00e9quipe du projet.\n\n\u201c Nous avons pris de l'avance sur notre objectif principal puisque nous en avons d\u00e9j\u00e0 d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 48\u00a0<em>Matooke<\/em>\u00a0hybrides qui se dirigent vers des essais de rendement pr\u00e9liminaires et nous en avons beaucoup d'autres en pr\u00e9paration, a-t-il ajout\u00e9.\n\nLe projet se concentre sur les deux types de bananes \u00e0 cuire des hauts plateaux d'Afrique de l'Est les plus populaires,\u00a0<em>Matooke<\/em>\u00a0en Ouganda et\u00a0<em>Mchare<\/em>\u00a0en Tanzanie, et les deux principales maladies qui s'attaquent \u00e0 la culture\u2015<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fusarium_wilt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fusariose<\/a>\u00a0et\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.promusa.org\/Black+leaf+streak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cercosporiose noire<\/a>\u00a0(la maladie de Sigatoka), et de deux ravageurs majeurs : les n\u00e9matodes parasites (vers microscopiques) et les charan\u00e7ons.\n\n\u201c En plus des 48 hybrides, nous menons six autres essais \u00e0 partir desquels nous pr\u00e9voyons de s\u00e9lectionner plus de 600 hybrides pour des essais pr\u00e9liminaires en champ. Nous avons \u00e9galement obtenu d'excellents r\u00e9sultats dans la production de graines destin\u00e9es aux croisement pour soutenir les travaux de s\u00e9lection \u201c, ajoute Jerome Kubiriba de la NARO, qui est \u00e9galement le chef d'\u00e9quipe des efforts de s\u00e9lection du projet.\n\nLes bananiers sont st\u00e9riles et produisent tr\u00e8s peu de graines, ce qui rend la s\u00e9lection tr\u00e8s difficile. Les chercheurs doivent les forcer \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper des graines pour effectuer des croisement et d\u00e9velopper des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s.\n\n\u201d Cependant, ces vari\u00e9t\u00e9s ont encore un long chemin \u00e0 parcourir avant d'arriver entre les mains des agriculteurs. Il faut g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement jusqu'\u00e0 20 ans pour d\u00e9velopper de nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de bananiers, mais gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ce projet, en collaboration avec des s\u00e9lectionneurs du monde entier, nous explorons de nouvelles m\u00e9thodes pour r\u00e9duire ce d\u00e9lai. \u00bb La NARO dirige les efforts de s\u00e9lection du bananier du projet, qui constituent la composante la plus importante et la plus vaste.\n<h3>Outils pour acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer l'am\u00e9lioration des bananiers<\/h3>\nLe projet a \u00e9galement int\u00e9gr\u00e9 diff\u00e9rents experts pour soutenir et travailler aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de l'\u00e9quipe de s\u00e9lection afin d'acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer et de simplifier le processus long et complexe de l'am\u00e9lioration des bananiers. Ils ont \u00e9galement r\u00e9alis\u00e9 de grands progr\u00e8s dans la r\u00e9alisation de leurs objectifs.\n\n<em>D\u00e9pistage rapide des maladies contre les agents pathog\u00e8nes et les nuisibles<\/em>\n\n\u201c Nous avons recueilli beaucoup d'informations sur les agents pathog\u00e8nes et les ravageurs les plus importants de la culture qui nous int\u00e9resse, \u00e0 savoir la fusariose, la cercosporiose noire, ainsi que les n\u00e9matodes et les charan\u00e7ons. Nous avons \u00e9galement mis au point des m\u00e9thodes de criblage rapide qui peuvent r\u00e9duire de moiti\u00e9 ou du quart le temps n\u00e9cessaire aux s\u00e9lectionneurs pour tester la r\u00e9sistance de leurs vari\u00e9t\u00e9s. \u201d\n\n\u201c Ces outils contribueront \u00e9galement \u00e0 acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer les efforts de s\u00e9lection du bananier \u00e0 l'\u00e9chelle mondiale \u201d, d\u00e9clare Albertus Viljoen de l'Universit\u00e9 de Stellenbosch, qui dirige ces travaux.\n\n<em>D\u00e9veloppement d'outils mol\u00e9culaires pour acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer le d\u00e9pistage de la r\u00e9sistance<\/em>\n\nLes biologistes mol\u00e9culaires du projet d\u00e9veloppent des outils biotechnologiques pour aider les obtenteurs lors du criblage pr\u00e9coce. Ceux-ci comprennent des marqueurs mol\u00e9culaires qui aident les obtenteurs \u00e0 d\u00e9tecter, d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but du processus de s\u00e9lection, la pr\u00e9sence des g\u00e8nes associ\u00e9s aux caract\u00e9ristiques souhait\u00e9es, telles que la r\u00e9sistance aux ravageurs et aux maladies, et seuls les plantules dot\u00e9es de ces g\u00e8nes passent aux essais en champ.\n\n\u201c Nous cartographions des marqueurs g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques pour nous aider \u00e0 identifier les g\u00e8nes qui contr\u00f4lent la r\u00e9sistance aux ravageurs et aux maladies chez les plantes. Nous avons \u00e9galement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 des mod\u00e8les pour pr\u00e9dire le rendement et d'autres caract\u00e9ristiques sur la base de marqueurs g\u00e9notypiques que nous \u00e9valuerons dans les ann\u00e9es \u00e0 venir \u201d, d\u00e9clare\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/iita-staff\/uwimana-brigitte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brigitte Uwimana<\/a>, un s\u00e9lectionneur mol\u00e9culaire \u00e0 IITA-Ouganda.\n\n<em>Musabase \u2013 soutien \u00e0 la collecte, au stockage et au partage de donn\u00e9es<\/em>\n\nLa collecte et l'analyse des donn\u00e9es repr\u00e9sentent une part importante des efforts de s\u00e9lection ; pour faciliter cette t\u00e2che, le projet a soutenu le d\u00e9veloppement d'outils num\u00e9riques, notamment une base de donn\u00e9es et une application mobile de collecte de donn\u00e9es.\n\n\u201c Si vous voulez utiliser des techniques de s\u00e9lection modernes, vous devez collecter beaucoup de donn\u00e9es g\u00e9notypiques (g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques) et ph\u00e9notypiques (physiques). Pour ce faire, vous avez besoin d'une bonne base de donn\u00e9es pour stocker et partager efficacement toutes ces donn\u00e9es. Musabase est une base de donn\u00e9es sp\u00e9cialement con\u00e7ue pour les obtenteurs de bananiers. Elle contribuera \u00e9galement \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des synergies entre les \u00e9quipes \u201d, explique Lukas Mueller, du Boyce Thompson Institute, qui dirige les travaux de bio-informatique.\n\nUne application mobile adapt\u00e9e aux besoins des obtenteurs sur le terrain a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e pour permettre la collecte de donn\u00e9es en temps r\u00e9el. L'application est en cours de test avec l'\u00e9quipe d'Arusha avant d'\u00eatre d\u00e9ploy\u00e9e aupr\u00e8s du reste de l'\u00e9quipe.\n\n\u2019 La base de donn\u00e9es et l'application mobile garantissent que les donn\u00e9es sont collect\u00e9es, analys\u00e9es et stock\u00e9es sans quitter l'\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me num\u00e9rique. Nous avons \u00e9galement form\u00e9 de nombreux chercheurs et techniciens \u00e0 la collecte de donn\u00e9es et \u00e0 l'utilisation de la base de donn\u00e9es \u201c, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 M. Mueller.\n\n<em>Essais sur le terrain d'hybrides issus d'une collaboration ant\u00e9rieure entre l'IITA et la NARO<\/em>\n\nLa collaboration pass\u00e9e entre l'IITA et le NARO a conduit au d\u00e9veloppement de 27 vari\u00e9t\u00e9s pr\u00e9coces\u00a0<em>Matooke<\/em>\u00a0des hybrides baptis\u00e9s \u201c NARITA \u2019. Deux d\u2019entre eux ont \u00e9t\u00e9 officiellement mis sur le march\u00e9 par le NARO en 2010 en Ouganda et sont d\u00e9sormais cultiv\u00e9s dans au moins 151 TP3T d\u2019exploitations banani\u00e8res ougandaises.\n\nLe projet soutient l\u2019\u00e9valuation de 20 de ces hybrides NARITA en Ouganda et en Tanzanie afin de d\u00e9terminer leur ad\u00e9quation aux conditions locales et leur acceptation par les agriculteurs.\n\n\u201d Nous \u00e9valuons les vari\u00e9t\u00e9s NARITA sur cinq sites d\u2019essai dans les deux pays afin de recommander la mise sur le march\u00e9 officielle de celles qui pr\u00e9sentent les meilleurs rendements et la plus grande r\u00e9sistance aux maladies, et qui r\u00e9pondent aux besoins des agriculteurs \u201c, explique Inge Van den Bergh, de Bioversity International, responsable de cet objectif.\n\n\u2019 Nous avons \u00e9galement men\u00e9 une enqu\u00eate de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour comprendre les caract\u00e9ristiques que les agriculteurs recherchent dans les bananes. Nous avons interrog\u00e9 plus de 1 000 m\u00e9nages et organis\u00e9 plus de 100 groupes de discussion ; nous sommes en train d\u2019analyser les donn\u00e9es.
