It has its head office at IITA’s headquarters in Ibadan, Nigeria, and will have a supporting facility at the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic<\/a> (UM6P) in Ben Guerir, Morocco.\n\nSpeaking at the launch in Nairobi, IITA Director General and CGIAR Regional Director for Continental Africa, Dr\u00a0Sim\u00e9on Ehui<\/a>, said: “The hub marks a significant and strategic step toward improved food security and environmental sustainability in the region.” He added, “By addressing soil health and promoting best practices in fertilizer use,\u00a0the hub will directly impact farmers’ yields and profitability.”\n\nCombating the widespread challenges\n\nTwo-thirds of arable land in West Africa and the Sahel is degraded,\u00a0hindering agricultural productivity.\u00a0Hence, fertilizer application rates are significantly lower than the global average,\u00a0and even when used,\u00a0application rates and soil type suitability checks are significant issues among smallholder farmers.\n\nTherefore, the hub seeks to address these challenges through knowledge sharing,\u00a0capacity development,\u00a0and policy advocacy. This will be achieved with a consortium of partners that will include the International Fertilizer Development Center<\/a> (IFDC), OCP Africa, the African Plant Nutrition Institute<\/a> (APNI), and the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P).\n\nHighlighting IITA’s role in implementing the Roadmap, IITA Deputy Director General, Research for Development (DDG-R4D), Bernard Vanlauwe, said: “The ECOWAS roadmap on soil health in West Africa and the Sahel,\u00a0endorsed by the regional leaders in Lom\u00e9, identified a key action: providing technical support for its implementation.”\n\n“Through a collaboration between the World Bank and OCP, IITA was identified to lead the hub and assemble a consortium of technical partners with combined expertise to address all the roadmap’s priorities. Over the past six months, the team worked to finalize a consortium agreement with OCP Africa, IFC, APNI, and UM6P.\n
