The IITA-IARSAF journal club, June edition was held on Thursday, 13 June, 2024 at the GRC Conference Room, IITA Ibadan. The article titled \u201cEthnobotany and Perceptions on the Value of Taro (Colocasia esculenta<\/em>) among farmers in the Benin Republic\u201d (DOI: 10.5897\/AJAR2022.16240) was reviewed by Oladimeji Joy Jesumeda. Joy a PhD student of Pan African University Life and Earth Science Institute (PAULESI) domiciled in University of Ibadan and an IITA research fellow with the Bioscience Center under the supervision of Dr. Ranjana Bhattacharjee and Dr Lava.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The article highlights the importance of taro in Benin from farmers’ perspectives and the impact of taro leaf blight on its production. Twenty-four taro producer farmers were interviewed in 17 villages in southern Benin representing 6 ethnic groups. Statistics on the respondents, household size, age category, and income sources of the taro farmers, emphasized the dominance of men in taro cultivation and the significance of young farmers in accepting new innovations. Joy provided detailed insights into the botanical varieties of taro, emphasizing the differences between the Eddoe and Dasheen types, their uses, and the preferences for the Dasheen type in Benin due to its organoleptic properties and cooking time. The article also touched on the readiness of farmers to adopt new technologies and the need to sustain production through the introduction of disease-resistant varieties as the production of taro has declined due to Taro Leaf Blight (TLB) disease. The authors recommended the need to understand the impact of TLB disease and diversity study in order to develop solutions to revive taro crop production. The presenter did a great job reviewing the article emphasizing the work as a baseline study’s findings and the need for further programs to address constraints and promote taro cultivation.
The Journal Club meeting had in attendance 21 on-site participants and 24 online participants. Also, in attendance was one of the co-authors of the journal article reviewed, Dr Lava Kumar the Head of the Germplasm Health Unit, and Virology and Molecular Diagnostics Unit at IITA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
