Through our collaboration with the National Agricultural Research Organization (<a title=\"Visit the National Agricultural Research Organization website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naro.go.ug\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NARO<\/a>), IITA\u2019s 20 years of banana breeding efforts resulted in the 27\u00a0<a title=\"Download &apos;Performance of narita banana hybrids in the preliminary yield trial, uganda&apos; publication\" href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/c\/document_library\/get_file\/?uuid=b9b48a00-2e85-42e5-b542-57a58cb15cf6&amp;groupId=25357\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Narita<\/a>\u00a0varieties that are resistant to\u00a0<a title=\"Visit the Black sigatoka page on Wikipedia website\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_sigatoka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black Sigatoka disease<\/a>\u00a0and with a good yield and well-formed bunches,\u201d VanAsten said.\n\nThe station has also recorded great strides in the development of banana varieties resistant to\u00a0<a title=\"Visit the Xanthomonas wilt page on the ProMusa website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.promusa.org\/Xanthomonas+wilt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Banana Xanthomonas Wilt<\/a>, worked on banana biotechnology, and developed two different cassava varieties with resistance to the\u00a0<a title=\"Visit the Cassava Mosaic Virus Disease (CMD) page on the cassavabiz website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cassavabiz.org\/production\/virus01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cassava Mosaic Virus<\/a>\u00a0et le\u00a0<a title=\"Visit the Cassava Brown Streak Virus Disease page on the cassavabiz website\" href=\"http:\/\/cassavabiz.org\/production\/virus02.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cassava Brown Streak Virus<\/a>. It also provided soybean and maize parent varieties which were successfully used by Makerere University and NARO.\n\nAdditionally, the station has successfully undertaken nutrient diagnostics and recommendations for different crops; developed legume-rhizobia high yield packages; implemented coffee-banana intercropping systems; utilized BXW diagnostic and control tools; conducted climate change prediction and planning especially for coffee; provided shade tree recommendations for coffee; and recommended value chain models for key crops. It has also created multi-stakeholder engagement models\/learning alliances; identified opportunities for gender and youth; and provided policy support to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (<a title=\"Visit the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.agriculture.go.ug\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MAAIF<\/a>) for extension and agricultural inputs. There has also been success in sustaining partnerships, quantifying the impact and needs of research as well as in capacity building for students and institutions.\n\nThe guest of honor, the Hon. Vincent Ssempija, MAAIF Minister, was represented by Okaasai Opolot, the Director, Crop Resources Directorate of MAAIF. He visited the booths escorted by the chairperson of the food security committee of Parliament, Hon. Abbas Namara, two other members of parliament, and Jerome Kubiriba, the national banana research program leader for NARO, who represented NARO\u2019s director general.\n\nIn his speech, the Minister commended the IITA Youth Agripreneurs\u2019 initiative.\n\n\u201cThe step IITA has taken in engaging the youth is in the right direction and should be a learning point. The research community is uniquely capable of generating the technical knowledge required to address the need for markets for agricultural produce, value addition, and regulation for inputs markets like fertilizers and pesticides.
