Cette subvention soutiendra le projet \u201c Yam Optimized Architecture through Gene Editing (YOAGE) \u201d, un projet innovant visant \u00e0 introduire de nouvelles variations g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques dans l&#x27;igname (<em>Dioscorea <\/em>(et autres) qui am\u00e9liore l&#x27;architecture des plantes. L&#x27;objectif du projet est de r\u00e9duire la main-d&#x27;\u0153uvre et l&#x27;impact environnemental li\u00e9s au tuteurage traditionnel des plantes, tout en permettant la m\u00e9canisation de l&#x27;agriculture au Nigeria, o\u00f9 l&#x27;igname est une culture vivri\u00e8re de base importante.\n\nLe projet YOAGE, d\u2019une dur\u00e9e de quatre ans, se concentrera sur le d\u00e9veloppement de vari\u00e9t\u00e9s d\u2019igname pr\u00e9sentant des caract\u00e9ristiques de croissance optimis\u00e9es, l\u2019am\u00e9lioration des pratiques culturales et l\u2019augmentation de la productivit\u00e9 et de la rentabilit\u00e9, tout en collaborant avec diverses parties prenantes, notamment les agriculteurs locaux, les experts agricoles et les d\u00e9cideurs politiques. L\u2019igname est la deuxi\u00e8me culture de racines et de tubercules la plus importante en Afrique subsaharienne apr\u00e8s le manioc, avec une production d\u2019environ 75 millions de tonnes (FAO, 2021) et fournit environ 200 kilocalories par jour \u00e0 plus de 400 millions de personnes dans les pays tropicaux \u00e0 faibles revenus et en situation de d\u00e9ficit alimentaire. L\u2019Afrique produit plus de 97% de la production mondiale d\u2019ignames, le Nigeria repr\u00e9sentant \u00e0 lui seul environ 66% du total mondial (FAO, 2021). En Afrique de l\u2019Ouest, et plus particuli\u00e8rement au Nigeria, l\u2019igname n\u2019est pas seulement une culture de base, mais joue \u00e9galement un r\u00f4le central en tant que culture phare traditionnelle profond\u00e9ment ancr\u00e9e dans les normes soci\u00e9tales, remplissant diverses fonctions sociales et religieuses.\n\n<figure id=\"attachment_31718\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31718\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31718\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IITA-and-Pairwise-secure-3.8M-to-boost-yam-production-2_Rose-Okech.jpg\" alt=\"IITA and Pairwise secure $3.8M to boost yam production through gene editing \" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31718\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L&#x27;IITA et Pairwise obtiennent un financement de $3,8 millions pour stimuler la production d&#x27;ignames gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l&#x27;\u00e9dition g\u00e9n\u00e9tique<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\nMalgr\u00e9 cette importance, la culture de l&#x27;igname est confront\u00e9e \u00e0 plusieurs d\u00e9fis, tels que le co\u00fbt \u00e9lev\u00e9 des mat\u00e9riels de plantation et de la main-d&#x27;\u0153uvre, la baisse de la fertilit\u00e9 des sols, des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s \u00e0 faible rendement n\u00e9cessitant un tuteurage, ainsi qu&#x27;une pression accrue des ravageurs et des maladies due \u00e0 l&#x27;intensification de l&#x27;agriculture. Si la s\u00e9lection conventionnelle a permis d\u2019am\u00e9liorer les vari\u00e9t\u00e9s d\u2019igname en termes de r\u00e9sistance aux ravageurs, d\u2019adaptabilit\u00e9 et de qualit\u00e9, elle n\u2019a toutefois r\u00e9alis\u00e9 que des progr\u00e8s limit\u00e9s dans l\u2019optimisation de l\u2019architecture des plantes pour l\u2019agriculture m\u00e9canis\u00e9e. Le projet YOAGE s\u2019appuiera sur des outils avanc\u00e9s d\u2019\u00e9dition g\u00e9n\u00e9tique pour surmonter ces d\u00e9fis et contribuer \u00e0 la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire mondiale, en particulier face au changement climatique, aux ressources limit\u00e9es et \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9volution des demandes des consommateurs.\n\nLeena Tripathi, directrice du p\u00f4le Afrique de l\u2019Est de l\u2019IITA, responsable du programme de biotechnologie et chercheuse principale du projet YOAGE, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 : \u201c L\u2019obtention de cette subvention de la Fondation Gates marque une avanc\u00e9e d\u00e9cisive dans la transformation de la production d\u2019ignames gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des technologies innovantes d\u2019\u00e9dition g\u00e9n\u00e9tique. En d\u00e9veloppant des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s am\u00e9lior\u00e9es d\u2019ignames \u00e0 port buissonnant, nous visons \u00e0 r\u00e9duire les besoins en main-d\u2019\u0153uvre, \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 agricole et \u00e0 renforcer la durabilit\u00e9. \u00c0 terme, notre objectif est d\u2019am\u00e9liorer les moyens de subsistance des agriculteurs et de renforcer la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire. \u2019\n\nLe projet YOAGE vise \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper ces vari\u00e9t\u00e9s en identifiant les g\u00e8nes contr\u00f4lant la croissance des plantes, en optimisant l\u2019\u00e9dition g\u00e9n\u00e9tique pour mettre au point des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s semi-naines et en analysant les impacts de ces changements sur la main-d\u2019\u0153uvre et les dynamiques de genre. En s\u2019attaquant aux d\u00e9fis techniques et environnementaux li\u00e9s \u00e0 la production d\u2019ignames, le projet devrait am\u00e9liorer consid\u00e9rablement la productivit\u00e9 et les revenus des agriculteurs, contribuant ainsi \u00e0 l\u2019objectif mondial d\u2019une agriculture durable et de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire.\n\nLa Fondation Gates a s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 l\u2019IITA et Pairwise pour cette subvention en raison de leurs ant\u00e9c\u00e9dents av\u00e9r\u00e9s en mati\u00e8re d\u2019innovations agricoles et d\u2019engagement communautaire dans la r\u00e9gion. L\u2019IITA est un centre mondial d\u2019excellence pour la s\u00e9lection des ignames et une source d\u2019am\u00e9lioration g\u00e9n\u00e9tique fournissant des g\u00e9notypes d\u2019ignames nouveaux et am\u00e9lior\u00e9s aux principaux producteurs d\u2019ignames en Afrique.
