{"id":18163,"date":"2026-06-20T13:02:25","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T13:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/news-item\/revolutionizing-agriculture-with-black-soldier-fly-larvae-and-frass\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T16:52:45","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T16:52:45","slug":"revolutionizing-agriculture-with-black-soldier-fly-larvae-and-frass","status":"publish","type":"news-item","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/revolutionizing-agriculture-with-black-soldier-fly-larvae-and-frass\/","title":{"rendered":"Revolutionizing agriculture with black soldier fly larvae and frass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_32961\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32961\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32961 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Visit-of-the-CEO-of-Agri-Impact.png\" alt=\"Visit of the CEO of Agri-Impact to the IITA BBEST Exhibition booth at the Agrifair.\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Visit of the CEO of Agri-Impact to the IITA BBEST Exhibition booth at the Agrifair.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le <a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/\">IITA<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgiar.org\/\">CGIAR<\/a> led BSF for Bio Circular Economy and Environmental Sustainability BBEST Project, engaged farmers at the maiden Edition of Channel One TV\u2019s AgriFair, held from 20 to 22 June at the Efua Sutherland Children\u2019s Park in Accra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the three-day event, the project exhibited a live display of the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) life cycle, attracting livestock and aquaculture producers, vegetable farmers, children, potential investors, agriculture institutions, and the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_32962\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32962\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32962 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/The-Production-Manager-of-the-BSF-Production.png\" alt=\"The Production Manager of the BSF Production Unit engaging visitors at the Agrifair.\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Production Manager of the BSF Production Unit engaging visitors at the Agrifair.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amuetey Nagetey, the BSF production manager, said, \u201cThe BSF technology is transforming the poultry and the agriculture landscape by converting fruit, vegetable, slaughterhouse, and kitchen wastes into larvae, which are a rich protein supplement used in aquaculture, poultry, and livestock production.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to reducing a substantial amount of waste in landfills, the BSF also reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, leading to urban sanitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twumasi, the Monitoring and Evaluation and learning specialist on the IITA-BBEST project, said, \u201cAdopting the sustainable production of the Black Soldier Fly larvae will aid in reducing the import of fish and soybean meal.\u201d This will make the poultry industry more profitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_32963\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32963\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32963 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/A-member-of-the-IITA-BBEST.png\" alt=\"A member of the IITA BBEST team explaining the BSF technology to potential investors at the Agrifair.\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A member of the IITA BBEST team explaining the BSF technology to potential investors at the Agrifair.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After being sensitized on the benefits of BSF, a substantial number of poultry farmers, vegetable farmers, and individuals showed interest in receiving training on BSF farming to start producing the larvae and the frass after learning the production process is environmentally friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BSF frass, a certified product by the Plant Protection and the Regulatory Service (PPRDS) under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), was also exhibited and marketed during the Agrifair. It is used to produce vegetables and to restore soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visiting the IITA-BBEST Project exhibition booth, Daniel Fahene Acquaye, the CEO of Agri-Impact, acknowledged the potential of the BSF technology to create jobs for the youth and showed interest in partnering with the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_32964\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32964\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32964 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Officers-from-the-Ghana-Prisons-Service.png\" alt=\"Officers from the Ghana Prisons Service at the exhibition booth.\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32964\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Officers from the Ghana Prisons Service at the exhibition booth.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ghana Prisons Service team, led by the Agriculture Director, Kwaku Ababio Ali, who also visited the project exhibition booth, expressed interest in incorporating BSF farming into the prisons\u2019 rehabilitation and agriculture programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis aligns with our poultry and aquaculture production programs. We see great potential in the BSF for food security and skills development for inmates,\u201d Ali said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through its participation in the Agrifair, the project has increased farmers&#8217; and feed producers\u2019 awareness of BSF technology, promoted the BSF frass among farmers, and established relationships with private and public institutions to enable the adoption and scaling of BSF technology and the promotion of climate-smart agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Contributed by Francisca
