Rows of lush soybean, maize, and cowpea plants stretched across the fields, drawing participants into an immersive experience of agricultural innovation and collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_33552\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33552\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33552 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Zaria-field-trip.png\" alt=\"Participants during the Zaria field trip\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33552\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Participants during the Zaria field trip<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event, hosted by Professor Lucky Omoigui, IITA\u2019s seed systems specialist, served as a platform to showcase IITA\u2019s new and improved crop varieties and to strengthen partnerships with seed companies working to bring these innovations to Nigerian farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis field walk is about ensuring continuity, making sure that farmers always have access to quality seeds,\u201d Prof Omoigui told participants as he led the group through the plots. \u201cThat access to quality seeds begins from the early stages of seed production.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his remarks, Prof Omoigui commended seed companies that have consistently partnered with IITA on early-generation seed production and encouraged even broader participation across Nigeria\u2019s diverse agroecologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the group toured the fields, participants observed the performance of various soybean varieties, including TGx 1951-3F, TGx 1904-6F, TGx 1448-2E, TGx 2020-4F, and TGx 2029-27F, as well as the new varieties released in 2025 (TGx 2029-27F and TGx 2029-53F). Prof. Omoigui explained how older but popular varieties, such as TGx 1448\u20132E, are being gradually replaced with newer, climate-smart options that meet both farmer and market demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_33553\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33553\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33553 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Professor-Omoigui.png\" alt=\"Professor Omoigui in Soybean field during the field walk\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Omoigui in Soybean field during the field walk<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discussions in the field were lively. Participants exchanged observations about how factors such as light intensity, soil moisture, and disease pressure influence plant growth and yield. The walk provided a firsthand view of how environmental conditions shape variety of performance, insights crucial for informed seed production planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond agronomy, the field walk underscored the importance of market-driven seed production. Prof Omoigui highlighted that while farmers may value varieties with high biomass for soil improvement, processors often prioritize seed quality for oil extraction or flour production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery stakeholder along the value chain matters,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen we understand what farmers, processors, and consumers want, we can promote varieties that are profitable and sustainable for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also shared IITA\u2019s success in developing a <em>Striga<\/em>-resistant large brown cowpea variety, bred to replace the widely preferred but <em>Striga<\/em>-susceptible <em>Borno Brown<\/em>. He explained that this innovation reflects IITA\u2019s commitment to \u201cbalancing the equation,\u201d and meeting market demand, while ensuring productivity and resilience for farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><figure id=\"attachment_33554\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33554\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33554 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/aking-a-tour.png\" alt=\"Taking a tour on the Shika research farm in Zaria\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33554\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taking a tour on the Shika research farm in Zaria<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the tour, Dr Afolabi, speaking on behalf of the seed companies, commended IITA and Prof Omoigui for their dedication to strengthening Nigeria\u2019s seed system. He praised the visible progress achieved in developing improved varieties and reaffirmed partners\u2019 commitment to continued collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his closing remarks, Prof Omoigui thanked the participants for their active engagement and reaffirmed IITA\u2019s openness to partnerships, feedback, and innovation. \u201cOur doors remain open,\u201d he said. \u201cTogether, we can continue to build a stronger, more inclusive seed system for Nigeria and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2025 field walk showcased IITA\u2019s latest crop varieties and reaffirmed the Institute\u2019s role as a driving force in strengthening Africa\u2019s seed sector. Participants left the farm with renewed enthusiasm and deeper insight into the future of seed systems, one rooted in science, collaboration, and shared growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
