Le Kagera est la premi\u00e8re r\u00e9gion productrice de bananes du pays, repr\u00e9sentant plus de la moiti\u00e9 de la production nationale. La plupart des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de bananes au Kagera sont des bananes \u00e0 cuire des hauts plateaux, commun\u00e9ment appel\u00e9es matooke, suivies des bananes \u00e0 bi\u00e8re et de quelques bananes \u00e0 dessert. Les petits exploitants agricoles de la r\u00e9gion sont tr\u00e8s vuln\u00e9rables \u00e0 l'ins\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire et aux revenus depuis des d\u00e9cennies, car toutes les vari\u00e9t\u00e9s sont sensibles aux principales maladies et aux ravageurs qui provoquent d'importantes pertes de rendement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les petits exploitants, les organisations gouvernementales et non gouvernementales ont d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 des efforts pour relever les d\u00e9fis li\u00e9s aux maladies et aux ravageurs en introduisant, propageant et diffusant de nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s connues sous le nom de \u201c Vari\u00e9t\u00e9s Sup\u00e9rieures de Bananes \u201d (VSB), notamment les hybrides FHIA et les races locales exotiques. Cependant, des informations ad\u00e9quates, syst\u00e9matiques et organis\u00e9es sur l'adoption, les taux d'adoption, les d\u00e9terminants de l'adoption et les impacts socio\u00e9conomiques faisaient d\u00e9faut, ce qui rendait difficile la d\u00e9termination du succ\u00e8s socio\u00e9conomique des initiatives d'am\u00e9lioration des bananes et la planification future.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/news-item\/banana-farmers-receive-free-tariban-plantlets-for-adoption-and-scaling\/\">interventions avec de nouveaux hybrides de matooke<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"820\" height=\"615\" src=\"https:\/\/iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SBVs-shipped-to-big-markets-in-Mwanza.png\" alt=\"SBVs shipped to big markets in Mwanza, Shinyanga, and Dar-Es-Salaam via Lake Victoria. (Cr\u00e9dit photo : IITA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En 2024, les \u00e9conomistes agricoles et les experts en bananes de l'Institut international de l'agriculture tropicale (IITA) ont explor\u00e9 l'adoption et l'impact des SBV dans cette r\u00e9gion. Leurs r\u00e9sultats ont \u00e9t\u00e9 regroup\u00e9s dans une \u00e9tude intitul\u00e9e&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10568\/178614\">\u201c Adoption et impact de vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de bananes sup\u00e9rieures au Kagara, Tanzanie : un guide pour la distribution future de produits r\u00e9volutionnaires \u00e0 base de bananes \u201d.<\/a>&nbsp;On a conclu que le taux d&#x27;adoption des SBV s&#x27;\u00e9levait \u00e0 48% deux d\u00e9cennies apr\u00e8s la premi\u00e8re intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&#x27;\u00e9tude a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 que le taux d&#x27;adoption \u00e9tait plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 parmi les m\u00e9nages dirig\u00e9s par un homme, o\u00f9 48% des m\u00e9nages de l&#x27;\u00e9chantillon avaient adopt\u00e9 des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de bananes plantains (SBV) en 2024, 25% ayant opt\u00e9 pour la FHIA 17, suivie de la FHIA 23 (7%) et de la FHIA 25 (4%). L&#x27;\u00e9tude a not\u00e9 que les caract\u00e9ristiques pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9es des agriculteurs et leurs crit\u00e8res d&#x27;adoption comprenaient la tol\u00e9rance aux maladies et aux ravageurs, l&#x27;adaptabilit\u00e9 \u00e0 des sols pauvres, des besoins minimaux en engrais organiques, des rendements \u00e9lev\u00e9s (gros doigts et grosses grappes), une meilleure qualit\u00e9 pour le jus et la fabrication de bi\u00e8re, une utilisation polyvalente pour la cuisine, les desserts et la torr\u00e9faction, ainsi qu&#x27;une forte commercialisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c Les agriculteurs ont pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 les vari\u00e9t\u00e9s FHIA 17 et FHIA 23 pour la cuisson et le dessert, tandis que pour la fabrication de boissons, les vari\u00e9t\u00e9s Yangambi KM 5 et FHIA 25 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9es \u201d, explique le Dr Arega Alene, \u00e9conomiste agricole \u00e0 l'IITA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FMhzU9rfv5Q\">l'adoption de semences de bananiers am\u00e9lior\u00e9es a permis \u00e0 davantage de m\u00e9nages de devenir autosuffisants dans la production de bananes<\/a>, consommant et vendant plus de bananes, et devenant plus s\u00fbrs sur le plan alimentaire. \u201c D'un autre c\u00f4t\u00e9, l'\u00e9tude a montr\u00e9 que dans les m\u00e9nages qui ont adopt\u00e9 les vari\u00e9t\u00e9s SBV, les femmes sont plus susceptibles de participer aux d\u00e9cisions de vente que dans les m\u00e9nages qui n'ont pas adopt\u00e9 ces vari\u00e9t\u00e9s \u201d, ajoute Dr Shiferaw Feleke, responsable de l'\u00e9tude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De plus, l&#x27;\u00e9tude a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 que l&#x27;adoption d&#x27;hybrides de bananiers avait permis d&#x27;augmenter la productivit\u00e9 de 151 % dans la r\u00e9gion de Kagera d&#x27;ici 2024, apportant ainsi \u00e0 l&#x27;\u00e9conomie r\u00e9gionale pr\u00e8s de 1,47 million de dollars de recettes issues de la banane. Cela g\u00e9n\u00e9rera davantage de recettes fiscales gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l&#x27;augmentation du volume et de la valeur des \u00e9changes commerciaux de produits \u00e0 base de banane, qu&#x27;ils soient frais ou transform\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ces d\u00e9couvertes indiquent que le secteur bananier de Kagera est en pleine mutation, les vari\u00e9t\u00e9s am\u00e9lior\u00e9es \u00e9tant d\u00e9sormais reconnues comme la cl\u00e9 de la r\u00e9silience et de la croissance \u00e0 long terme. Cela montre \u00e9galement que les agriculteurs sont dispos\u00e9s \u00e0 adopter des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s am\u00e9lior\u00e9es, m\u00eame si elles sont tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rentes des bananes plantains des hauts plateaux, qui constituent un aliment de base. Le vif int\u00e9r\u00eat des agriculteurs t\u00e9moigne du succ\u00e8s des efforts pass\u00e9s visant \u00e0 impliquer les agriculteurs d\u00e8s le d\u00e9part dans l'\u00e9valuation sensorielle de nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s issues de programmes de s\u00e9lection et dans la promotion des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de bananes am\u00e9lior\u00e9es par le biais de tests \u00e0 la ferme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cela souligne la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d'accro\u00eetre les investissements dans la recherche sur les bananes et de diffuser les innovations qui en r\u00e9sultent pour relever un \u00e9ventail plus large de contraintes de production et augmenter les rendements des bananes. \u201c C'est la premi\u00e8re fois qu'une \u00e9tude portant sur de nouvelles vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de bananes est men\u00e9e, r\u00e9v\u00e9lant un impact aussi important \u201d, explique Rony Swennen, s\u00e9lectionneur de bananiers \u00e0 l'IITA.
