BSF decentralized units established in Adeiso, Somanya and Kumasi. The project supported farmers in the eastern region and the Ashanti region to establish the Decentralized Units, a small and simplified building for mass production of the BSF larvae and Frass for use in their farms and for sale. With the support of BNARI, the project has trained agripreneurs and youth to undertake the mass production of the BSF products and supplied them with start-up kits to start the production.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Ghana: Establishment of the BSF Processing facility at Kofisah in Nsawam.<\/strong><\/p>

To scale up the production of the Black Soldier Fly products, the BBEST project has established its centralized unit. It employed members from the Kofisah community where the processing unit is established and adjoining towns trained them to support with the mass production of the BSF products. The products from the centralized unit will be sold to smallholder chicken, fish pig and vegetable farmers in the Kofisah and the adjoining communities. As a climate smart technology, the BBEST project facility in Ghana is equipped with solar system and run on a hybrid electricity system and reduce electricity cost. As part of its activities, the project is conducting research for optimization of the BSF systems for improved quantity and quality production, including feed safety and standards requirements and increased profitability, new local substrates and nutritional components samples were shipped to NIBIO and IMR for more advanced analysis. Duplication of analyses locally are ongoing at National approved laboratories. Research on the growth rate of animals (Pigs, Chicken, Quails, and Fish). Research on vegetables production with BSF frass is also on going in Ghana. Through the BBEST project, a standard on animal feed titled \u201canimal feeding stuff \u2013 specification for dried insect products for compounded animal feed\u201d has been developed to guide the production of the BSF products<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As one partner of the BBEST project, the AALI trained agripreneurs and youth on the rearing of the BSF and the use of the BSF larvae as feed for animal and organic fertilizer for vegetable production. The IITA BBEST through AALI has established the decentralized units for farmers, equipped them with the solar system and the BSF rearing kits to support them to produce their own larvae and organic fertilizer. AALI is conducting research on the use of BSF frass on plants like amaranth and Black nightshade. Experiments are ongoing on the suitability of the different local substrates and the use of the BSF larvae compared to other local substrate.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Students from the Islamic University in Niamey visited the BSF central Unit unit established by The IITA BBEST Project and its partner INRAN with funding from Norad – Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation. The unit offered: a formative and enriching experience to its visitors.<\/p>

During their visit, the students gathered extensive knowledge on the rearing process of the black soldier flies, and the weather conditions needed for a successful rearing. Furthermore the technicians provided them with information on the dried black soldier fly larvae, an alternative source of protein used in the formulation of chicken fish and pig feed and the frass used in the production of vegetables.<\/p>
